Finally went off-road for the first-time. I took the 101 class from Offroad Consulting at AOAA on April 12. It was just myself and another guy in a Cherokee Trailhawk taking the class. Kyle is a fantastic teacher. He spent a lot of time with each of us during the off camber section. Having us each go through multiple times. He had me go through with and without the lockers engaged and also with and without the swaybar disconnected so I could see/feel the difference. I can't wait to go out again.

Do you know what trail this was? I heard it was on the eastern side, but I'd like to find it. I plan on going there in a few weeks.

Well, his last photo shows his GPS coordinates which puts him near the north-east edge of the map. Unless, they are not posted from the same trail...

Hey there, I had to check with off-road consulting because I couldn't remember since we were all over the west and east sides of the park. They said the obstacle is located off of Ba trail on the east side.

hey, are there any trails in Michaux? I read they have a lot of dirt logging roads, anything scenic worth exploring for someone who has never been there? I'm just looking for easy trails and I like to do some hiking too, thanks
Never been there, but it looks like ther are definitely places to hike, and camp. Seems there is an atv trail and some places you can go in a 4x4 vehicle but I wouldn’t say they have any real off-roading trails from my brief internet search.

Michaux is nice for an easy ride. None of the trails/roads there are really challenging. Just south of Mt. Holly on 34, you can go up the mountain on Ridge Road. That's the rockiest section of road in the forest. From there, there are many forest roads to explore heading southwest all the way to the Maryland border. We were out there a couple weeks ago for the day and had fun, we started at Mt Holly, took forest roads all the way to the Maryland border, then did some other forest roads on the way back, jumped on 233 about halfway back since we were running out of time. That was a full day. There are some nice places to pull off and go for a hike or see some nice views, like at Hammond's Rocks, Chimney Rocks, or Buzzard's Rock. Laurel Lake, Caledonia Lake, etc. are nice too. I think Tuscarora State Forest is a bit more interesting, feels more "wild" - but both are worth a visit. I was just up in Tuscarora State Forest on Tuesday. We went up Three Square Hollow Road, nice scenic overlook at the top, there's another one on Bower Mountain Road... we did Blue Mountain trail and Gunters Valley trail, both go deep into the woods. You won't get stuck, but they are more interesting than much of anything in Michaux. Blue Mountain is the longer of the two, but a little more mild, with several mud puddles on the way, and a small clearing / turnaround spot at the end. Gunters Valley is rocky with some water, and a good mud pit at the end. When you see the gate straight ahead, don't worry, the trail actually continues to the left. The gate just blocks the straight/right split. We got there around 11 AM and finished up around 5:00 at Colonel Denning State Park and headed home from there.

hey @pennsoxfan, any chance I could ask you for clarification on your recommendation for Tuscarora...
is "Gunters Valley trail" the same as Trout Run Rd (40°07'13.1"N 77°41'02.8"W)?

or is it Gunters Rd here (40°12'11.1"N 77°36'14.8"W)?

thanks so much!

It’s Gunters Rd. Interesting that they call that other road Trout Run on Google Maps... on the state forest map, it’s also called Gunters Valley, with a trail that connects the two (see map attached). Trout Run is the stream/creek that runs next to the road. We didn’t see a connecting trail though, so we turned back after we splashed through the mud pit at the dead end. It was very soft mud when we were there. If I were you, I would contact DCNR and order some of their maps, they are very well done, lots of detail. When are you coming out to Tuscarora?

the map is fantastic, I'll definitely get some of these. I'm in south jersey and this will be a 3+ hour ride for me (one way). I tried to convince a buddy to do an overnight this weekend since the weather is good, but no go. I hope to get out there sometime this month while it's still warm and light until late.

thanks again for all the info!
