Took a road trip from Texas to Indiana the first week of April. On the way I did add a jug of Blue DEF to bring it back up to full.

A few days after we got here it seemed like a great idea to cross a little stream. It turned out to be about 2 ft deep and definitely submerged the exhaust system.

Almost immediately a CEL popped up. As soon as I was able I pull the codes:

Last night we put some of that Rislone stuff in that is supposed to clear the DEF injector.
Jeep Wrangler JL P20EE code at 62,000 miles Rislone DEF Crystal Clean Diesel DEF and SCR Emissions System Cleaner 11.8oz

We put about 50 miles on it last night and this morning, then I pulled the DEF injector to clean it.

The injector was actually very clean but the port on the exhaust itself was caked up pretty good.

I cleaned that out and then realized all the previous times I had tried to clear the error code I was doing it wrong. I needed the engine to be off and in run position instead of actually running.

So I cleared the active and pending codes, only the permanent one is still there. The CEL is no longer showing and hopefully the permanent code will clear with a few drive cycles.

What I wanted to find in JSCAN was the live monitoring for the NOX sensors but I wasn’t able to find them. If anyone can guide me to that it would be great.

in other news, I had the same error only 12,000 miles ago. I took it to the dealer and they had it two weeks and supposedly replaced the SCR and the downstream NOX sensor. I don’t have a high level of confidence they actually did replace them though. They have a history of telling me they replaced something they clearly hadn’t. I need to find another dealer…

Edit to add: the first time it happened we were cruising down a dirt/gravel road and hit a rough patch of washboard. Shook us pretty good.

I don't know if it was this code or not, but I got a code after sinking half way up my doors in thick mud.
My tail pipe was burbling. I was scared. Went right to a car wash and cleaned up. Cleared the code and it didn't come back.

I too thought this was do to my tail pipe being submerged.

I was nervous too but after watching this video I went for it. It actually comes out VERY easily.

The little black gasket will fall off so if you pull yours, watch for that.

I’m not sure if the Rislone or the cleaning helped to be honest. But I did go back and buy their normal DEF additive for next time I top it off.

Which dealer did you take it to?

UPDATE:
We were in Indiana for another week after clearing the codes using JScan. The CEL light remained off but I was keeping an eye on the emissions readiness checks to see if they would reset. Three of them had not and I believe the three stragglers were:
  • NOX/SCR Aftertreatment
  • PM Filter
  • EGR and/(something)

Even going on intentionally long drives trying to meet the criteria of an emissions drive cycle which the internet defined as:
  1. Start with a cold engine, off at least 8 hours allowing it to cool completely.
  2. Warm up the engine, let it idle approximately 5 minutes, allowing it to reach operating temp.
  3. Moderate acceleration, drive at moderate speed, avoid sudden bursts of speed, maintain a steady speed for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Drive on the highway at least 55mph for at least 20 minutes. Vary speed slightly, accel/decel gradually.
  5. Park and idle for approximately 5 minutes, allowing it to cool down.

Things eventually cleared when we were halfway back to Texas (about 1000 miles after clearing codes). We drove for about 8 hours and ~500 miles into Missouri when I checked the next morning everything was good. I believe the iDash is able to show old codes because they are saved to the flash card. Jscan does not show anything at this time. Current theory is dunking the SCR into icy cold water reduced it's efficiency since they have to be hot to function.

Neither iDash or Jscan show current errors:

Jeep Wrangler JL P20EE code at 62,000 miles IMG_3994

Notice on the recall display, the drive cycle for the error is 1299 vs the current cycle of 1355.
Jeep Wrangler JL P20EE code at 62,000 miles IMG_3991

The emissions readiness tests are all showing YES (they have completed).

I had a similar light and dropped half a bottle of Rislone in mine and the other half in hers. All the ights went out and I went on my way. I will get another small bottle of the DEF treatment when I have to add DEF again.

Rislone has a maintenance solution for def treatment as well. Not just the heavy duty decrystalizer. I've been using it the last couple fillups.
