How do we know any of your story is based on science? Are you sure you and him not related? Did you get it tested?
I follow my owners manuals for all products, it has served me well but like I said if you want to change your oil every 20 miles, go for it. They thank you for your support.

Do you?
You actually let your food sit for a minute after microwaving it?

So you didn't get it tested, either.
Hey, I just wanted to make sure you only speak selective “science”, like the rest of the people.

Send some in and see what they say smarty pants. Even at 10k still life left in the oil for most vehicles that were made in the 2000’s. If paying for extra oil changes is your peace of mind this is less cost than an oil change. Afraid of data specific to your vehicle to make a knowledgeable decision?

No, thank you.

So back to you and your "friend". Did you get it tested to make sure he is not your third cousin? The one that hit 200k in his and changed his every 30,000 miles? I want to make sure that you didn't come up with a story that is selective “science”, but you keep dodging the question.

I’m not the one changing my oil when it doesn’t need changed without anything to prove the owners manual is not right. I get it, science scares you and you’re feeling:

So new Jeep owner my plan is I changed the oil at 500 miles. Send off the oil analysis to speed diagnostics. My next oil change. I will compare it with the analysis of that oil change and compare it to the oil health indicator and make my decisions on oil change accordingly

I recommend checking out speed diagnostics YouTube page where he discusses the oil health indicator and how it works a very informative video

I also have a tool to cut open the filter and inspect it, which I plan on doing at every oil change. I figure an informed decision with all the facts is the best way to go.

I've sent my oil in, and because I do such short trips I need to change mine every 3-4k miles.

If you do go by the oil life indicator thing, is there anything written as to when it's in the window time to change it? What percentage?

I live on an island. Posted speed limit is generally 25mph with the exception of school zones and town which is lower and 2 main-ish type roads where it is as high as 45mpg. Left to its own devices the algo would tell me to change the oil every 6-7 months and every 5K miles or so. While it is not perfect it’s more sophisticated then just time and just straight miles

To summarize the oil change accounting above; oil is cheap and engines are expensive. Some of us like buying oil insurance and others do not. Who am I to judge…
Nantucket! 😮 Oh, cool! Always wanted to visit the “islands around Rhode Island.” 👍 And yeah, I’d imagine if you never get the Jeep above 50 mph, that would probably result in less engine wear?? 🤷‍♂️ But then you would rarely even see 6th of 7th gear, right?

I change the oil when it says “change oil soon.” I figure that message is pretty clear.

One time i let it go and the message changed to “oil change required,” and I was like 😮… I couldn’t handle the guilt. Never again. 😂

I do not drive far enough to have had the oil life indicator go below about 50%, so when I change the oil every six months I am happy. The service advisor brings me a small paper cup of the oil, so I can see how dirty it is (not bad since the top end rebuild on the right hand side) and they tell me if the magnetic chip detector has anything on it. I reckon all this is good.

I'm a little compulsive about oil changes. In fact I've changed my oil eight times in 24,000 miles over five years. My most recent change was less than 800 miles ago yet my "oil life" indicator reads 32%. The recommended change interval is 10,000 miles. What gives?
Loosely stated, the oil life indicator is based on an algorithm that takes into considerable data from your Engine Control Module (ECM) which looks at time of engine run, type of driving and acceleration, amount of oil/gas mix after the gas is injected and cycle completed, oil filtration and type of impurities etc. Usually, it will tell you to change the oil before the oil is so contaminated or lubricity is so bad it would harm your engine. With the Turbo, the full synthetic oil is usually good for around 5000 miles, but you should still visually look at the oil also, that is a good indicator of its useful life. The best approach is to get an oil analysis after 3k or 5K miles and take a serious look at the results which would be scientific indicators of how your driving style is affecting oil life.

I agree with most of that except, ive drove too hard my whole life. my son drives like his grandmother. 35 and never had a ticket.
we had identical trucks with 5.7s . both of our oil change lights came on at about 8000.

That very well could be, as when you take shorter trips and do not get the engine up to normal operating temps, the water vapor does not get burned off as much as it should. This together with all the other factors will decrease the oil lubricity. There are many factors involved in the lubricity degradation and the algorithms the car manufacturers use. Chrysler and GM were based on that very science if I am not mistaken. However, forgoing the program, a visual inspection is a good indicator of contamination as well as an oil filter inspection for wear items without the expense of an oil analysis.
