Wharton/ Pine barrens is the only good place I can think of. But this is more south. If in North Jersey, I'd look something up West in PA. Quick search gives many trails there, but I don't know anything about them

Things have already changed down there I've heard. Maps aren't accurate and people are getting warnings and tickets much more frequently. It's really sad.

I've heard the same. Here's a link to the most recent map on the NJDEP website - https://www.nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/wharton/

I'm demoing the shower in my basement bathroom this weekend otherwise I'd be down for a ride. I've never been to Wharton but have been meaning to go. I think there's also some dirt trails that are legal down near Six Flags (a bit closer than Wharton), but not totally sure.

There's a short trail that goes along the edge of the Safari Great adventure, where you can see the animals from "back door" through the wire fence. Fun to take the kids

Yea I think now the leaves are off the trees it'd be even better. We didn't see much when we went through there but it was nice.
Right around the corner from me.

How can you get a ticket? Sorry, that's really bizarre from the perspective of someone living in a state with over 22 million acres of public land.

There are plenty of trails that either have always been or recently have been converted to walking trails only. There is very little signage, so you as someone taking a vehicle into the state first are responsible to know where it is legal to drive. And it’s a moving target. Luckily I’ve only seen park police on the most popular trail, which is a named road. So those are legal. At least they were two years ago. Now… I’d be worried for sure.

Wow, that's pretty screwed up. Here it's just about wide open unless there's a private property / no trespassing sign.

The majority of land out this way is privately owned and completely ignored. It’s crazy.
Look at upstate NY. If it’s not privately owned, it’s state land and they’ve imposed very strict no motorized vehicle statutes.
