Yeah, Poison Spider outside of Moab has a stretch like that (depending on conditions). In a manual you have to commit to a specific gear and hope you chose wisely.
Yes. I got my arse kicked on that very obstacle the first time I drove it, in a manual. The second time I drove it was in an automagic, and it was a breeze.

I have owned many manual vehicles including my JKUR. This question is always out there.

Simple answer for this. If you often feel like you need to shift while in 4L and you need to shift in a water/mud crossing. Both those circumstances are bad with a manual.

Manual shifting in 4L is terrible And hard to do.

Manual shifting in muddy water is destructive To your clutch.

Manuals are fun, I hate when an auto thinks it needs to shift. But I won’t buy another manual. Automatic is the direction automakers are going. So if you want to have current stuff and full power from your engine, you have to get an auto.
Yeah mud, water and steep inclines can be a bitch with a manual. Part of the fun. LoL Like I tell people u need to pick the right gear and try not to faulter.

Me I prefer manual. A little boring on pavement but a lot more fun in the dirt!

I did some light offroading this past week in my manual and I didn't get as much of a leg workout as I expected lol. It was difficulty 2-3 type stuff according to OnX, so I'd be singing a different tune on more technical stuff I'm sure. However I was impressed with how much the Offroad + and hill assist features were helping me out. It definitely boosted my confidence. I look forward to the next adventure.

I run a local trail that has to be at least type 3. (It's not in the books.) An auto would be easier but I like the challenge of knowing which gear to use and when to shift. It's kind of an art.

The automatic will be easier to offroad for sure. The JL has the hill start assist which is helpful by holding the brakes for you while trying to manipulate the clutch and gas. This can be even more assisted by some tuners that lock the brakes when you are not on the gas etc... I thoroughly enjoy the manual on the road tho.

The 1st time I went up my trail I was glad my jk had hill assist. There's a k turn where you have to back up starring into a 30' ravine and the slope is over 30 deg on the edge. If not for hill assist I would've had to use the parking brake to make sure I didn't go over if I fucked up.

Gotta love a good pucker factor to keep you on your toes. My favorite one last year was a spot on Fins where I was teetering a little and my 3 year old daughter started shouting "daddy we have to drive this home" as echoed by her mother lol.
