Anyone been in Montana to drive your jeep off road? I am headed up to Glacier in late August and trying see if I need a permit to drive off road? Kind of confusing on line, mentions UTV, side by side, ATV, motorcycle, but not clear about a Jeep.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

there is essentially no where around Glacier to offroad in a jeep. the closest area is near Lakeside MT but that is kind of a boring man made trail...There is some nice jeep roads near Philliipsburg MT probably my favorite local trail. Also some nice trails near Deer Lodge... check out some of Willie's books at www.montana4x4trails.com

Will check into that and was hoping to find some trails on the way down to Yellowstone. But do you need a permit to go off-road in the state?

No permits. You can drive on many many forest service roads, and these will be signed to indicate what kind of vehicles are allowed (if there's any restrictions, otherwise anything goes). In NW montana there are some private logging roads that are also clearly marked.

In glacier, the closest thing to off road is the North Fork Road on the west side of the park. This is a gravel road going to some "primitive" camping sites at Bowman and Kintla lakes.

Check out https://www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/ to see roads and areas to explore.

no offroad permit needed for a licensed jeep but atv's need an offroad permit on forest service roads..many atv/utv roads are not open to jeeps. there are great trails around Cooke city again. Goose Lake is an awsome trail and not too far from Yellowstone.

also late august can be a smokey affair....that is fire season and last year it was pretty mild so this year will probably be bad....I essentially live about half way between YS and GP and would not want to fight the crowds in either in August but I hate people...

No permits needed for your jeep. There are some amazing trails to explore in the Bridger area. Bridger is a 1hr drive SE of Billings.

This was July of 2024 on TR2850: some of the most diverse terrain that I’d ever been on!

Every year is probably a little different but "about" when has the snow melted enough in the spring that you can start hitting the trails again? I'm in eastern Wa just across the Id. border so I'm guessing things start clearing for you a little later then they do around my parts.

we are getting dumped on this month so my guess is early July. My favorite place near Phillipsburg up past Granite ghost town is called Fisher lake and that on a good year is not open until later June.

Most trails in Montana are scenic and geologic more than rock crawling. Plenty of other places for that. On your way up to Yellowstone, take Chief Joseph Highway (yes, it is paved as is the Beartooth highway but both are some of the greatest roads in America). As noted, in the Cooke City area, might to up to Lolo pass and run around up there. You will probably go back thru Yellowstone thru the Lamar Valley. That takes you to Gardiner. Above Gardiner is Jardine. There are some old mining roads up there if you have the time. If you go up to Big Timber rather that back thru the park, up around Nye are some mining roads, like up to Iron Mountain and Chrome mountain. Otherwise, just take back roads rather than the interstate and see what you can see. Have fun. Great state.

only thing up there is the lolo motorway and a little further is the Magruder corridor..both are very nice but just roads that you can take in a crv or subaru...both are 100+ miles of dirt road but in August the Magruder is so dusty and often closed due to fires. Lolo motorway gets very little traffic and pretty neat. Buddy and I came up on a calf Moose that had its throat ripped out. it was literally pumping blood when we rolled up to it. I have done lolo motorway probably 20X's and magruder maybe 6X's.

there is some decent rocks around deer lodge along with the fisher lake trail near phillipsburg.
these photos are lolo motorway.

CORRECTION: JADMT is correct:
only thing up there is the lolo motorway and a little further is the Magruder corridor..

Lulu pass. Not Lolo pass. Lulu pass turnoff is just past Cooke City just before Colter Campground. Sheep mountain is a good ride up. I have seen a Wolverine in Lulu pass area. Daisy pass is also a good ride.

Lolo pass takes you on a nice ride thru Idaho for miles along the Clearwater River, but a LONG way from Cooke City.

Sorry about that, thanks JADMT!

I can’t imagine going 35 mph down that road! Beautiful scenery. I don’t need rock crawling just fun semi challenging backroads. Thanks for the info.
