It is insurance, and it should be based on an algorithm or formula, probably based on a dollar amount to make it easier. Towing shouldn't be on road or off, it should be based on some reasonable amount, say $200 per occurrence with no more than two occurrences per year. Doesn't matter if it is on road or off, you get the benefit you pay for, regardless of where the vehicle is located. You pay the difference if it's more.

Might as well ask if AAA should pay tow bills for people who don’t subscribe to their membership plan, and vehicles that aren’t owned by a member.

I have a question more specific to the interests of this group: if your in-warranty Jeep breaks down on the trail, for a warranted component, will Jeep pay to have it recovered and towed to the nearest dealer? Anyone with personal experience or direct knowledge?

As I see it AAA is not in the off-roading business. Jeep OTOH…

I have found through experience that AAA will not tow a vehicle off-pavement in CA and AZ. NV is diiferent, and AAA towed our vehicle from Jarbidge, 100mi from the nearest pavement. I asked why this is, and was told "NV has a LOT of maintained dirt roads. If AAA excluded them, no one in NV would buy AAA." So it seems to vary by state.

I used them when I been stuck, this was about 10 years ago. But it was still on or just immediately off named roads... I believe that’s their limitations, is it has to be public roads. I do know they will not pick up or drop off inside airports…

That’s an excellent point, that “road” doesn’t necessarily mean pavement. We go a lot of places in rural states and provinces where there are mapped county roads that are not paved. I would expect any towing subscribers to receive service on a dirt road that’s on an official road map.

I've saved more than enough by not having AAA to more than pay for any tow I'll ever need.
Same with home appliance pre-pay repair services.
Same with warranties for every last thing.
I save enough to justify paying for AAA and I haven’t used them for towing in a long time… Despite having top tier status at many hotels, I still get a better rate with AAA (I’m not military).

It depends on the AAA contractor. Some are properly equipped to tow vehicles off road some are not.

As a large AAA provider myself, we generally do not “accept” AAA rates for serious off road towing or recoveries. AAA officially says they will only tow you on public maintained roads. But in rural colorado, “public and maintained” could include engineer pass, schofield pass or worse. So you can see how definitions can get you in a pickle.

AAA says your vehicle must be currently registered and you must be on-site at the time of tow to deter fraud. People try to work their system all the time.

AAA is just like car insurance it doesn’t cover all situations like people think it does. Like if you need to get towed 201 miles you’ll pay for that extra mile out of pocket and so on.

Towing a rzr for $15,000 Off road and saying its a regular vehicle then posting the tow on youtube is so stupid…

As someone else said, it must depend on the individual contractor with AAA.

I live in north central Nevada - not all that far from Jarbidge. Wife and I both had AAA coverage because they claimed they provided coverage EVERYWHERE in Nevada. Then my wife's XJ had a small problem while she was driving a good graded dirt road, not far from town. She called AAA - and they, once they found out she was not on pavement, refused to pick up the XJ.

That's when we dropped AAA coverage...not much pavement in Nevada, mostly dirt roads.
