I upgraded my tire carrier and as a result lost my cooltech CB mount. I purchased the ACE Stand alone carrier, which has 2 mounting points. One would interfere with the glass opening even with the door fully open, the other in the center. I mounted everything up in the center mount and went off to test my SWR. Off the charts on 1 & 40. Diagnosis: No ground.

I come back, scrape off the powdercoating...no ground. I contemplated tearing everything open again to run a ground strap, but it had started to rain, so I decided I'd had enough for the weekend.

This morning I go out, realize the mounting location is not the same size as the cooltech mounting hole. This afternoon I'm going to drill out the mount to 1/2" and scrape off the paint at the mount location and give it a try. The tire carrier is all solid metal that is bolted to the jeep body, so I suspect it will ground well without a grounding strap, but if that doesn't work I will have to rip off all the trim again. Anyway, if any of you are newbies like me, know that the standard mounting stud hole is NOT the right size if you have a fire ring coax base. You need a 1/2" mount hole. Happy Trails!
