Tried a search and didn't see anything definitive. I have never had a vehicle with an oil temp gauge, but running 230-240 degrees on the oil temp seems really high to me. Even saw 248 one time. Is this normal? Are there aftermarket oil coolers that can be installed?

Yea that’s pretty much normal. Oil starts to break down above 270 or so.

What are you doing at the time the oil shows that temperature? Mine typically runs in the 195°F - 220°F range depending on ambient temperatures and engine load.

I have a manual and larger tire heavy f&r bumper and lift kit no regear. So I alway rev the living crap out of that poor engine. 3rd gear 6000 rpm up the long hill doing 75 80 every day. I also live in a area with 55 60mph local speed limit and I have to shift above 4500 rpm 1st and 2nd gear to so how keep up with traffic.....And the hottest I have ever saw was 235, and it cools right down to 200-210...

Ah...ok. Those temperatures should be considered "normal" for that condition. I would not be surprised to see them push into the 250°F range at times. If you do that often, I would up the viscosity of the oil to 5W-30 to give yourself some extra protection.

Normal engine oil temp runs about 10° higher than your engine coolant temp. But this is once that the engine is warmed up to normal operating temp.

Highway driving I see ~195° F plus or minus 10°. Off roading on the beaches I've seen around 220°. But I don't drive my Jeep like I stole it either and I don't push it off roading.

I have 91k on my 3.6JLU, I monitor my oil temp data constantly and still haven't made sense of it. I drive extreme offroad and commute on the highway daily between the air temps of 0 and 100 Fahrenheit. I range from 185 to 240 f on the digital readout for oil temp. FYI at around 240 degrees I've had a secondary fan come on off-roading last year in the winter, sounds like a jet engine. What's strange is these engines will run just as hot idling in a starbucks drive thru in 40 degree weather and at wide open for an hour in 90 degree highway speeds.

Driving up Rubicon up grapevine from Bakersfield area last Saturday (4 of us in jeep, 95F out), 60-65mph in 3rd or 4th, A/C on, I watched oil temp range from 235-239F, coolant always about 20F cooler. Once up over Tejon and not under load, both temps dropped to normal highway range in 190s with little delta between them. Seemed logical to me.
