I ordered a NOCO Genius2D Trickle Charger from Amazon and installed it in the engine bay of my Ram less than 7 months ago. It died.

I had previously installed the same type of charger in the engine bay of my Rubicon 392. When I sold it 18 months later it was still working fine; so I didn’t hesitate to install a new one in the Ram.

NOCO offers a 3-year warranty, so I sent an e-mail to them and received the following response:

“Unfortunately we are not able to reimburse orders from other websites."

Has anybody else had problems with their NOCO Charger or NOCO’s Warranty?

This is common, and not limited to Noco.

I bought my Odyssey charger from AutoZone after reading this exact situation.

Marantz (stereo equipment) is the same way.

Ditto for some top tier lawn equipment.

Always buy bigger ticket items from an “authorized reseller” if warranty is a concern.

Thanks! Fortunately it was less than $50. I will heed your warning on big ticket items.

Unfortunately, every faulty charger they refuse to accept (and inspect) means one less data point they would have had to help them build more reliable chargers.

@cbh

Apparently, you did not buy from an authorized reseller of NOCO products.

If you Google NOCO the entire page is devoted to Amazon
I've bought two NOCOs from Amazon - both from the "NOCO Store". Isn't that a NOCO-managed authorized channel?

Confusing, isn’t it?

With Amazon, there are always various sellers. When you purchase, a NOCO assure you are buying from the "NOCO STORE" on Amazon.

If you click on the “NOCO Store” an Amazon page opens. If you add an item from the NOCO Store you still get the same result: “Sold by Amazon.com Services LLC.” In a subsequent e-mail NOCO told me I should have bought it from NO.CO, their direct website.

There's a NOCO store on Amazon. Is it not run by NOCO, or is your assertion that @cbh bought from a third-party seller?
I told them I bought it from Amazon. They said there is no way they can verify I didn’t buy a “used” one even though it is seems obvious Amazon buys direct from NOCO. IMO, all they have to do is run the serial number and, assuming they keep track, determine which retailer received it for resale.

Last month I bought an ice maker from Amazon. When it arrived it didn’t look like the original, so I called the vendor. They told me GE had changed the design; to go ahead and install it; and, if I had any trouble with it, send it back directly to them for a full refund. They didn’t care I bought it from Amazon. What a great company!

I have come across the occasional vendor that warrants their products only when purchased direct, and not through an external site like Amazon. The only exception occurs when the brand itself has an Amazon storefront. This is why it's important to look at the Ships from and Sold by entries on the product page.

E.g., Holosun. Their hand was forced when enough reviews appeared where buyers mentioned receiving obviously used and/or damaged RMR sights from 3rd party sellers. So, policies such as what NOCO has done do make sense from a business perspective.

I agree that it can be annoying, particularly from a price perspective. Oftentimes the Amazon listing has a better price than the brand's own website. Bad actors recognize this, and take advantage where they can (again, per my example of Holosun.)

Unrelated, I learned (the hard way) that a trickle charger (1-2 amps) is bad for an AGM battery. 10a, minimum. Got that info directly from Enersys (makers of Odyssey and Northstar). There’s a thread on battery talk… long story short, I ruined a Northstar battery. They warrantied it, anyway. Great company.

Anyway, since you have to buy a new one I wouldn’t go smaller than the Noco-10.

That's true, conditionally. I've used trickle chargers to good effect for many years with AGM motorcycle batteries. I've a new one on the bench right now, being maintained with a 1.25 amp Battery Tender until I make the time to install it in my Ural (which is a mini-operation in itself).

For automotive batteries, yes, go big(ger). ?

Wow, that's lame. I bought my GB50 from amazon.com when the price dropped and saved a few bucks. NOCO's Amazon storefront doesn't mention anything about warranty, but the NOCO website says the thirty-day return policy only applies to items from their no.co store.
