Full disclosure this is on a gladiator. I just had a set of 5.13 gears installed by a local one man shop (who has done many gear sets). Upon first drive I’m noticing some noise around 55 mph. The jeep was silent before and isn’t now. You can hear some whine that clears up once you get to 60. If you let off the throttle there’s a louder whine as it transitions to coasting. I have to assume this isn’t normal. I called the installer and he said he heard some slight noise but that it shouldn’t cause any issues. Idk I’m not sold and idk what to do.

Here’s the pattern photos. I do not know the details of how it was setup. EDIT: installer claims backlash was set at .006, revolution 2 cut spec is .004-.007

What do you think? First photo is front second is rear. Obviously the front won’t matter much at this point.

That noise should not be and IME it won't get better with time. Also would like to see gear pattern on drive and coast for both front and rear axles.

How to Break in a Ring and Pinion

The suggested break-in procedure for a ring and pinion gear is as follows:

  • - Drive 15 to 20 miles under normal driving conditions (no highway speeds), stop and let differential cool before proceeding, repeat this process 2-3 times
  • - Avoid heavy accelerating during the break in process
  • - Keep the vehicle under 60 MPH for the first 100 miles
  • - Highway driving also requires proper break-in due to the higher heat temperatures produced, drive 15-20 minutes at max 65MPH, stop and let differential cool before proceeding, repeat this process 2-3 times
  • - Driving on a new ring and pinion before the initial 500 mile oil change should be under normal driving conditions: no hard starts, racing, off-roading, towing, and should not be flat towed.
  • - Change Gear Oil after the 500 mile break-in, this removes metal particles and phosphate coating from the gear set during the break-in period.
  • - *Towing: After the 500 mile oil change, the first towing should be less than 15 miles, then let the differential cool before proceeding, Repeat this process 2-3 times

Yes I am following that. He test drove it 20 miles. I drove it 15 miles got gas, waited a bit in the parking lot and then drove another 15 home. It’s 15f here currently so I’m sure it’s not overheating lol.

So I should be good to cruise for the remaining 50 miles then get it to highway speed.

At 60 mph it quiets right down to nothing, 55 is when it’s “loud” (most noticeable) .

I would isolate the rear driveshaft to verify it’s not the cause. I assume you went from a lower gear ratio to the 5.13s?

Or send the gears to GearFX for $125 per isotropic finish. …. Break in procedure
• 500 mile oil change

Nascar throws them in and goes 200 mph. … also run cooler, $250 well spent

Yep, agreed but I think OP is already into it far enough he just as well finish the painful process of letting his gear sets grind themselves in.

Thought I’d mention it for the benefit of unknowing others getting a re-gear . 😊
Will at ECGS sent them to FX, them to me. No extra step or shipping, just a call to FX to pay them 👍
