@zouch

Very good info. Thanks. I will do what it takes to break in properly if I need to take a day off work and drive the cycles for a day.
I just want to do the best I can after spending 2K on things I never want to see again.

I generally would follow these: https://revolutiongear.com/blog/rin...TyIjmUZuoBCQfTfPfx8ARGKcDokesEVRrP-Wv6Dvcbkoc

Drive 15 miles around town, stop and go traffic. Wait an hour for the gears to cool. Repeat.
1. Ask the shop if they did any break-in drives? They should, because they need to check for noise. That gets rid of at least one of the cycles.
2. When you drive it home, if its more than 15 minutes, after 15 stop and get a coffee. (that's 2)
3. That night, let it cool at home and get the third in before bed.

Keep it under 60 for 100 miles (but with 3 break-ins you will have 45 or so of the miles out of the way)

4. Then drive nice for 500 miles.

Also, this does not break in the front diff. No one seems to care about the front diff....
1. When I was on a dirt road, I would flip to 4wd as much as I could. (20 min max)
2. Sometimes on pavement, driving straight ahead, I would kick on 4wd for a couple of miles. Not long enough to bind, but just getting some time on the diff.
3. I waited to change the front diff fluid till I felt I had some more time on it.

  • Drive 15 to 20 miles under normal driving conditions (no highway speeds), stop and let differential cool before proceeding, repeat this process 2-3 times
  • - Avoid heavy accelerating during the break in process
  • - Keep the vehicle under 60 MPH for the first 100 miles
  • - Highway driving also requires proper break-in due to the higher heat temperatures produced, drive 15-20 minutes at max 65MPH, stop and let differential cool before proceeding, repeat this process 2-3 times
  • - Driving on a new ring and pinion before the initial 500 mile oil change should be under normal driving conditions: no hard starts, racing, off-roading, towing, and should not be flat towed.
  • - Change Gear Oil after the 500 mile break-in, this removes metal particles and phosphate coating from the gear set during the break-in period.
  • - *Towing: After the 500 mile oil change, the first towing should be less than 15 miles, then let the differential cool before proceeding, Repeat this process 2-3 times

Usually 4wd operation is slow enough and interrupted by stops that the risk of overheating the gears without a prior break in is fairly low. That said, I'm neurotic so I took my Jeep on a long dirt road and spent 4 hours in 4wd doing a full break in, complete with IR thermometer to check.
