Hello, I have a 2019 jl rubicon, it will be sitting for a few months and wondering about disconnecting the negative terminal while away, I have a tender but freaked out about using that for 4 months and no one looking at it, don't need any fires... perhaps overthinking it, thanks in advance!

I've used battery tenders to good effect without constant monitoring (e.g., seasonal storage of motorcycles, and a snowblower w/12V key starting.) That said, your concern about safety is a valid one, given that any such charging devices won't be checked on at all during your 4 month absence.

In that instance, I'd be comfortable disconnecting the negative cable, and storing the fobs a fair distance from the vehicle just for the sake of redundancy.

P.S. -- The 4xe was new for the 2021 model year, and your Jeep is a '19, so your inquiry might get more eyes on it in the Battery Talk subforum.

If you're using a tender you can leave it connected. However if it's going to sit for an extended period of time you might as well just disconnect the battery and save yourself the electricity.

I have my Kubota tractor on a battery tender from November to April with use only if I have snow or some tree dragging to do. Otherwise it sits on the tender. No issues.

I’d be hesitant to leave the system without power. Just installing a new battery the screen locked up, security code needed, it ended up costing $110 for Jeep to pull it to get the serial # off the back to get the code. Many have no problems, but apparently some do. 🎲🎲

Interesting.

I just installed a new H7 AGM battery in October, replacing the original factory battery, and there weren't any untoward issues when the cables were reconnected. Granted, the vehicle wasn't without power for an extended period of time. I removed the existing battery, cleaned the battery tray, installed the new battery and snugged up the cables. Done.

Mine was only disconnected a few minutes, I asked about it and was told to keep the system powered, suggestions were an OBD2 plug in that connects to another lighter plug, use jumpers from another battery to the cables, even a 9V battery connected to the cables was said to maintain the electronics. I won’t make the mistake again even though $110 got the security code, something else may not like it.
Before the next one I liked this idea

I have a 9V-powered memory saver for that exact purpose. I forgot to use it when changing the Jeep's battery, but didn't have any issues, thankfully.

Our Honda dealer will, upon proof of ownership (usually just the registration document) provide the security code for the head unit to the owner at no charge. It's unfortunate that you had to fork over a C-note+ for the same information.

Ignorance- change battery, security code required. I went to Jeep parts with the vin# - nope, service writer tried, called a tech out - nope. Said they had to pull it for the serial # , $110. Sure glad I saved money doing it myself 🙄 I’ll have to look into the 9V saver, OBD2 ?

Mine plugs into the cigarette lighter. Easy peasy.
Would require the ignition in “run” position for the plug to be “hot”, or is it “acc” 🙄 no issues ?
