I’m installing a 2.5 inch Metalcloak in a few days and need to figure out how many inches in bump stops I need upfront and in the rear. What I don’t understand is why I need them. I have 285 75/17s on stock suspension(Sahara JLU) and they don’t rub. I know I need them but can’t figure out why and how many inches considering there is currently no rubbing. Can someone educate me?

You all have been a huge source of great advice and info. Thanks for your help!

you need them because mc has a lot of shock travel and if you didn’t have them the tire would get up in the fender when flexing. I’m at 3,5” and am running 3” of stop. I’m guessing your need 3” but someone will correct me if wrong.

Thanks, so it’s because I’m replacing my stock shocks with shocks that have more travel and therefore allow the suspension to compress further.

It's mostly the socks but real every part of the Metalcloak kit allows your suspension to flex more than stock. Disconnecting the sway bar will allow it to flex even more.

The bump stops are for A) keeping the tires from smashing into the fenders or anything other components from hitting underneath. B) for keeping the shocks from bottoming out and C) for longer coils it keeps them from fully binding together. Running the minimum you can get away with is usually the best option. On my mc 2.5 i had 2” bumpstops. On my current 2.5” set up im running 1”. It all just depends. If you cycle the suspension with the spring out you can see if you need to add or subtract some based on tire location in the fenders and how much shock travel is left.

Well I haven't called up the specs but pretty sure the collapsed length of an aftermarket shock for a lift will be longer than collapsed length of stock.....so for one thing you need bumpstops so you don't risk using those longer shocks as bumpstops themselves. Granted, the longer replacement coils will also not compress as much as stock, at least theoretically

I'd say most people need bumpstops because they're also fitting bigger meats at the same time. If you're gonna run stock tires then you may not need a lot of stop. Again, I'd make sure you're not crushing whatever shocks you install

As noted above, you don't want the shock to act as the "bump stop". along with other stuff colliding.
