I had a JTM 4.10 on 37s, always had to go into 4lo for obstacles and for hills. Went to 5.13 and life changed in the dirt.

On my JLURD 3.73 on 40s/38s, I stayed with the 3.73 but was always going back n forth with 4lo while in the dirt.

On the 392 3.73 on 38s, struggled to stay in 8th on the highway, if the wind blows at all, you drop to 6th/7th gear. Geared to 4.88, can hold 8th even up long passes if you stay light on the throttle.
Yeah seems like the diesel can pull that pretty common. I have the 392 axles but not the ass to move it haha. The torque on the 392 is almost double my 3.6

I've thought about front axle swap, and could still be an option, but I'm selling the Jeep in ~3 years so I may not even do the lockers and regear. It'll really depend on how much I'm wheeling this next year. But I've calculated new front axle+rear lockers+regearing both axles (unless I get really lucky and find a 4.56 or 4.88 front axle) and its cheaper to just regear and add lockers to both.
If your ownership has a likely end date, then I would agree with your plan.
If you are planning on trussing the front and doing knuckles and all that, I would still start with a D44.

@stretch-bsn my advice would be to hold off until you can re-gear and get full size 37s. If you really don't want to wait then maybe get some used KO2 takesoffs in the meantime. I sold mine really cheap and they only had like 27k miles on them and were in great shape. So someone got an awesome deal and I got a little money back to put towards my Coopers.

I hear you and that makes sense. I don’t think I’m going to wait even though you are most certainly right. As far as used…

I actually really like this idea but I’m apprehensive for a couple reasons. Looks like with discounts from discount tire I can get 5 new tires mounted and balanced for a little under $2,100.

I’d be happy to get a used set that was a better price (actually just saw some guy in NY who sold a set with wheels for like $1500 which seems like a decent deal)

I worry that I know just enough to get into trouble lol. I know it can be expensive to get a set of tires mounted and balanced if you don’t buy them from a dealer…I’ve been burned before (not with tires) buying used stuff and not knowing. If I could find a set like you are talking about I’d probably jump on it when funds are right (probably won’t be for a few months).

Just curious. Why did you start with a Sport? It seems like a lot more work.
In some states (like CA), your annual registration costs are based on CMV for the model you purchased, so buying a Sport for low $ and building it up for high $$$ saves you money over your entire length of ownership.
