Something I don't think anyone has mentioned is the difference in rear end gear ratios. The Rubi is 4:10 and 3:45(?) for the Sahara. This will make as much difference as anything.
The OP caught that a few responses back as well.

I know there are a number of Sports and Saharas who have scooped up factory Rubicon rims and tires - it would be interesting to see if their mileage was close.

I do agree - I think gear ratio will also affect it. But so will average speed

and to be honest, I don't think much of anyone buys a Jeep to have good gas mileage. Those people buy a Prius.

Our Sahara & Rubicon are averaging 17.8 and 17.1 respectively. Both are the same driving routes, and 70/30.
Both are part-time 4wd
The Sahara is 3.45 rear and 6-speed
Rubi is 4.10 and 8-sp auto.

Both running factory tires for their model.

Until today.
Sahara gets the old rubi wheels & tires and the rubi gets bead locks and 315 70r17.
Gonna see how much articulation we get (and keep an eye of spring-now issues) before suspension mod

To be honest, that’s exactly why I’m buying my Rubi! I get 11.6 in my F-150! At least that’s why I’m telling my wife I’m changing!

My Sahara has about 2200 miles on it. My normal driving is mainly city (small 5 mile trips) and I’m getting a little over 18.5 during those trips. Highway mpg for my trips to Orlando is closer to 21.5 - 22.

I wonder why my mpg is so low. 15.4 compared to everyone else. It’s my daily with probably 60/40 hwy and city.

That’s way too low. I thought I was one of the lowest mpg with average 17.5but I know it is the way I drive and highway at 78mph with wind makes it worse than city driving.

I bet most of the better numbers are from the automatic crowd.

I have a manual Rubi. I drive mostly highway and back roads. I have 4300 miles on the Jeep and am averaging 21.6 mpg. I’m averaging 23 with this tank. I get my best mileage on the County backroads where my average speed is around 45 mph.

Mine is manual too. Autos make better but not much. The real killer is speed.

Interestingly on my usual weekly routine my '18 Rubicon (auto) gets roughly the same fuel consumption as my '12 Sahara (3.73, auto) did, both stock. I'm quite impressed with that really.

^^ what he said.

I said this months ago (and a few others have brought it up) and the experts on this forum poo poo'd that thinking. Sorry, but the numbers bear it out. You're turning 19% more revolutions at speed with the larger diff. Add a little bit of benefit back onto the Rubi due to higher torque at those higher revs, and people should see 15% or more worse mileage with the 4.10.
