So the Jeep was built Dec 2018 and I felt it necessary to drop some coin on new pads and rotors now that we are 6 years old. That said the front pads still look like they have a lot of life in them, the rotor…well it’s ok.

Then I did a comparison of my new pads (Raybestos) to the Mopar and noticed that there is a noticeable difference in actual pad surface. I measured the Mopar pads 1/2 (.500) shorter in pad material on both sides as compared to the Raybestos brand.

That said I decided to change them for that reason. I have the BRY brake code and ordered my pads though Rockauto as such. I’ll let you folks know if anything amazing happens using these.

That is more surface area. Is the pad composition the same?

Interesting. Is that a taper on the top of the OEM pad also, or is that a shadow?

So the Mopar pad material is squared off, that shadow is actually area of the backplate that is empty just like the sides. Looks to be about .365 wide at its apogee. Meanwhile the Raybestos pads use the entire backplate.

Not sure what the Mopar pads are made of but the Raybestos are ceramic/semi metallic…says or on the box so could be either. Supposed to be OE spec’s.

I know that you mentioned the surface area as the reason for purchasing the Raybestos brake pads. That said, there's still considerable service life remaining on the OEM pads. Certainly, they're worth keeping on hand for emergency spares.

Do the Raybestos pads advertise improved stopping power, vs. the factory brake pads? Just curious.

Oh also, this completely explains why the rotor has a rust ring on its outer diameter. There is no pad material contacting the rotor…so it doesn’t wear and rusts. Just seems weird that the OEM setup wouldn’t use the whole friction surface.

I had to do a panic stop recently and I didn’t like how well the Jeep performed. Figured the pads were done after 6 years of use, guess I figured wrong.

That said I trust Raybestos brand, I’ve used them for all my changes recently (I have used other brands, but Raybestos performed the best out of all of them). So I just ordered what I knew would work.

These are considered “daily driver” replacements on Rockauto, and looking at the box there is no language that states they are anything more than “meets OEM”. I’m replacing them just for piece of mind and what looks to be a better design.

Hope this helps,

?

Interesting. I ordered a set of hawk lts pads yesterday since I'm also looking for a bit better stopping power. I'll eyeball them when they get here and see if the surface area looks like yours.

So final observations, it does stop much better with the new pads up front. Forgot to update, the rear pads were the exact same between the mopar original and the raybestos replacement. Again, didn’t need replacement, did them anyway since I had it apart and parts on hand. The raybestos parts fit with no drama or issues. So far, highly recommended changing at least the fronts if you have the BRY brake code so you can take advantage of better pad/rotor contact.

Cheers ?
