I've been thinking about doing the Mojave Trail (again). I've done it a few times on horseback in 6 day group rides. It's probably a 1-2 night camp trip by jeep, depending on how much stopping along the way to check out things. Looking to see if anyone is interested.

The Mojave Road • The Adventure Portal

It cuts through the Mojave National Preserve, so there's some rules. Among the rules is a 7 vehicle limit without a permit. Above 7 and we'd need a permit and I think it was a 30 day turnaround. So, I'd like to keep it under that. No off-trail driving, pack it in-pack it out, no souvenirs, etc. Not sure on the recreational shooting, but I'm not interested in having a shooting party.

The start would probably be off of Afton Canyon Road or we could start further west toward Barstow, but there really isn't much to see between Barstow and Afton Canyon. Afton Canyon is a neat canyon with some interesting things. Sometimes there's a bit of water in the canyon.

Just fishing at this point.

I have done many preserve day trips closer to Primm, usually starting in the Cima area.

Interested in the trail, just depends on timing with work.

Don't miss "Spooky Canyon" in Afton...took my Scout troop there last winter (jeep shuttle), camping at the BLM CG.

A couple decades ago, we took horses part way up Spooky.

I've been wanting to do that trail so I am interested. Agree, It's too hot in summer but have to think about water (rain) in winter. It's supposed to be a wet winter again this year.

I have been wanting to do this trail for a while now. I am currently dealing with some health issues but might be able to head out before it gets hot again, like in the Spring. Been in Afton Canyon several times, but never went further east. So, you are planning to go west to east, ending in the back side of Laughlin? Ill be keeping my eye on this thread!

When we rode horseback, we'd start in between I-15 and I-40 around Harvard road, eastbound. We'd end at the Avi casino, at Fort Mojave just south of Laughlin, on the river, get a room for the night and celebrate.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I am interested. I will be in the south west about the first week of January until about May. April is full as we plan to spend a month wheeling and camping on the Baja Peninsula.

Our horse ride was in March, the weather was often perfect 60s or 70s in the day and 30s to 40s nights. But it can get brutal old, windy, snow, rain too. I'd like to keep the schedule flexible enough to work around bad weather.

I should be fairly flexible. I plan on sending my wife to Rome or where ever her and my youngest son plan to travel to in March or May depending on the deals they find. I also plan to be an instructor at Overland Expo in May or when ever they schedule Overland Expo West for 24.

We are set up to camp in any type of weather, but prefer it to be at least 25 degrees or warmer at night.

I would like to make this. It will not be a deal breaker if my wife is gone, I can solo it too.

I may do some scouting trips in the next few months. Out and back day trips doing bits of the trail. A friend used to have a cabin on the west end of the trail between Afton canyon and Soda Lake. We spent many years out there, dirt bikes, buggies, airplanes, then horses.

Cima road is going to be closed from the 15 to Cima for some time. Only a concern if you need to get gas there.

Zzyzx is closed. Kelso depot is closed. Neither a problem really.

The water crossing is Afton Canyon is now shallow. Due to one of the late summer rainstorms a lot of silt washed through and the road is actually above the wire fence in places.

I'm interested to see how far the York fire burnt and hopefully Caruthers Canyon is unburnt.

34.91844, -116.65249 would be the Western end of the trail.

There's only one cabin I know of between Afton and Soda lake.
