New to the site.

Wife and I will be in Moab 6-10 Sept, then heading to Ouray 10-13 Sept. We just bought our Jeep, so it's still on paper tags, and thought, "Hell, no better way to break it in than to head to Moab."

I've made some mods, and I think i'm done before the trip. I wish I would have gotten a winch and some recovery equipment, but I'm trying to stick to the easy stuff so I'll do my best to not get stuck.

If yall will be there, here are the trails we plan on hitting:
  • Shafer Trail
  • Gemini Bridges
  • Top of the World
  • Onion Creek
  • Fins and Things
Any info, pointers, etc., would be greatly appreciated!
sounds good... I may change up my plans to head out with some people and head to Utah ..... would need to check with gf see if she is ok with that.... we were going to head to wild bill trail in Montana then Monument Ridge in Wyoming..... plans can change though

I'm looking at mid-October possibly doing a trip. I'm off between 10/18 and 10/24. I'm not doing Blackbear pass, no way! Lol! Moab/Colorado are certainly possibilities.

We Expect to be in Moab No Later than the 7th but may end up early. We also plan on driving into Colorado on the 10th to visit with a friend and then back to Moab. We will be staying at the Moab Valley RV resort. I also have a guide from Outlaw 4x4, laid on for two morning trips, one to poison spider and one on Hell's revenge, If you want to look into tagging along then we can talk to Outlaw and you may only need to sign a release form, give a description of your Rig and tip the Guide. I already paid for the excursion and i think we can have up to 3 jeeps. I would have to check to confirm it.

We’ll be arriving into the Silverton area the night of the 14th of September.
As it turns out we will be a week and a half behind you. Getting to Lake City on the 23rd and on down to Silverton on the 24th. Sorry that we're missing connections.

For some entertainment you might enjoy watching this video of a fellow southerner on Black Bear last month.

And, did you make it up to Dahlonega the other Sunday after those heavy rains?

Later,
Johnny

I’m assuming the one mod I would need for Moab on a stock JLR, if only one could be chosen, are diff skids. Agreed? Just ordered some.
Diff Skids will be a very good Mod to make before you go. Cracking those pumpkins have been a very common occurrence in Moab and if you can't retain fluid in your diff, your in trouble. They are super easy to install. If you have a trailer hitch, I would recommend a simple trailer hitch extension to keep from smacking your spare, due to a steep departure angle and causing damage to your gate. cheap and effective

I think you are spot-on. It isn't overly expensive, either.

I just armored up my diffs for a pre-tax total of around $300. I did a Rancho slider up front and an ARB cover in the rear. The slider up front protects that vulnerable drain plug, and the diff cover, as well. The rear isn't as vulnerable, and tends to slide over obstructions, so I went with the ARB as I'm more likely to damage it by backing into a rock.

I survived a bunch of trips, including Moab, with careful spotting and good luck. I watched some guys in our Jeep club knock their diffs on some rocks in Kentucky a few weeks ago, and that convinced me I could use some more beef in that area. One guy had the slider up front and it impressed me how it took a good hit and then slid right over the top of the rock with no damage.

I did, a little bit. Turned around at the giant mud pool.
Probably a good idea if you were alone and without a winch. It was pretty nasty earlier in the year when it had been dry for a week or two.

Later,
Johnny

Yeah I’ve been stuck before in the mud up there alone. Never again.

Dave, We will be in the Denver area Sept 4th-14th and plan to do a bunch of trails in central Colorado. If you get that way message me and we'll plan a trip.
Have fun.

We are planning to do Kingston Peak and trails in that area on Tues 8th.
We are planning to do Red Cone Wed 9th. If we survive all that we want to do Wheeler Lake Thurs or Fri. We'll hit any close trails if time allows.
Let me know if anyone wants to hook up.
