Hi! I am planning on 1.5 weeks of wheeling with a friend this June. June 11-22 or so. I have some questions.

1. Can you tell me about how hot it really is? I am from Michigan. I get that its hot, but is it really that bad?

2. What's the best setup for the jeep? Id like to do doors and roof off. Is that doable? What about roof up but no doors? Or is that crazy and we need the AC? Will we get cold later in the evening?

3. Any other advice? Is there any equipment specific to the Moab environment I need to purchase?

4. How busy will the trails be in Mid June? Should we expect to be waiting in line for obstacles?

Thank you!

It's not about the hot, it's about the sunburn. Your interior will get very dusty, but it's cleanable (mostly). Keep a sweatshirt in your rig. Pay attention to the trail ratings as it relates to tire size. You won't be waiting at obstacles, the side by sides will be waiting on you. Have fun!!

We went twice last year, once in a stock rental rubicon, once in ours. In the rental it was the first week of July.

1. I mean it's kind of hot, more so in the sun.
2. All about the amount of dust you are willing to endure/clean. Topless the sun can get hot.
3. Slick rock is like driving on sandpaper. Air down stuff, some tools, and recovery gear just in case. Buy the Fun Treks Moab book, and use the Red Rock 4wd Ratings as a guide.
4. Shouldn't be bad, wasn't in July or October. The more popular the trail, the more likely you'll see SxSs and Tours.

It gets warm, but not unbearable. Bring twice the amount of water that you'd think, it's dry more than anything else. I have a bikini top for shade, comes off easily in the morning, for high noon and later it's handy to have. As said above, it's a dusty envionment, especially if the wind comes up. The trails are never really that busy early in the summer, by July when everyone is on vacation it always seems a bit busier. Most of the traffic is from side by sides. After the sun goes down in the evening it'll cool off, but it won't get cold. Bring a sweatshirt. You don't need spare gas or gas cans, there's plenty of gas available in town, trails are not that far apart. Be prepared to air down for the trails and back up when you get on the highway.

It's going to be hot really hot expect 100-105 degrees at day and 70's at night weather will be typically sunny with little to no shade, You will want a gallon of water per person per day, take sunscreen, and chapstick. Most of us Utahns only goto moab between Feb-early may and Late sept - October for perfect weather. As far as gear to take spare tire, basic tools for trail repairs, spare u joints, belts hoses fluids. As long as you can see the La Sal mountains you will have cell reception. Charles Wells Guide to moab trails is a great book its sold at practically every store in moab. As far as wait times for obstacles in June there wont be any that's more of a EJS thing. I suggest running fins and things then hells revenge when you first get to moab to get acclimated to driving on the spines of rocks as well as the accents and descents. they are in sand flats are close to downtown moab and right next to each other

So, it sounds like it is hot. Make efforts not to get sun burned (especially being from the north). My hope would be to not bring doors, and be able to put the factory soft top up if needed for sun protection. Leaving the windows at home.

The rest sounds pretty standard. Recovery / repairs.

Differences are bring lots of water, sunscreen, and chapstick.

You mean leave the doors at the hotel, right? That's a hell of a drive naked, lol.

That's a good point. Driving to and from the trailhead could be cold in the morning / evening.

I was considering a mesh top under the regular soft top. So at least we always have some protection. But it sounds like the mesh won't be enough...

We did trails one day in July with top off but with shade screen...fun but dusty. I ran Fins and Things about 3 in the afternoon...90 degrees and not another soul around. If it gets hot you can always go to La Sal Mountains and run LaSal pass and Geyser pass....be much cooler up in the mountain. You will have a blast! Enjoy. ✌

It's not that cold first thing in the morning that time of year, a sweatshirt and you'll be fine with no doors.

But yeah, if you were going to drive all the way from Michigan doorless, mad respect, dude!

1. It is hot but dry. Comfort can be found in shade if you find it, but prepare to be uncomfortably warm in the sun.

2. I say leave the doors on. Every SXS I pass in the summer looks absolutely miserable. It’s just not worth it in my opinion.

3. aside from standard trail equipment (recovery gear, first aid, shit kit, etc) bring lots of water, and get Charles A Wells Funtreks book. It’s one of if not the best resource for information on Moab trails.

4. Moab is huge, most of the time you’ll have trails to yourself save for a few popular trails (hells revenge & fins n things come to mind). It is getting busier every year though.

Fellow Michigander here!

I’ve taken 2 trips to Moab recently. One was the first week of June and the other was the middle of august. Conditions were similar for both trips, expect 90-105 deg Temps. It was hot but completely manageable with plenty of water, food, shade, and sunscreen.

The first trip I went topless and the second trip I went half doors and soft top with the windows removed. If you go topless get a sun shade

The summer is the off season for Moab due to temps so we almost had all the trails to ourselves

My biggest recommendation is to get the funtrek guide book

Enjoy!

I'll likely be in Moab a lot of those days. Have family coming from Iowa with their Jeep.

It will be hot in the day. Stay hydrated and out of the sun and you'll be okay. Your Jeep will get very dusty inside with the doors off.

A few basic tools, make sure you have what you need to change a tire and you'll be okay.

We drove down last week in August with the intention of putting the top down, however it was way too hot. as everyone suggested bring a lot of water and sunscreen.

we didn’t run into any crowds on the trails, in fact on Elephant Hill road we didn’t see another person the entire day
