Do you use Max Regen all the time

Previously I had Max Regen on all the time since day one.

I did the one foot driving etc, then I came across a video from 4xeFans that made me stop using it.

Now the drive is completely different, and I can coast, then when I need to slow down or stop, I just hit the brake as normal.

Thoughts?

You'd be loosing the regen of coast deceleration.

Just as an example, on one of our standard highway drives in Charlotte, the speed limit drops from 55 to 45 on a down grade. If I reduce the cruise at the top of the grade (where the warning sign for the speed change is), the regen will kick in and drop me to the lower speed right as I cross the speed limit sign at the bottom.

If it makes a big difference, who knows.

It's important to understand what max regen does on the 4xe because there's a lot of misconceptions.

The only thing that max regen does is remaps the input to start the regenerative braking from when the driver presses the brake pedal to when they let off the accelerator. In either case, your initial deceleration is done using the regenerative braking system (RBS). It's not until you demand higher levels of deceleration that the mechanical brakes engage in either mode.

The value in max regen is largely in city driving, where earlier engagement of the regenerative braking prevents you from ever requiring deceleration that exceeds the capabilities of the RBS that would otherwise be lost to heat. Likewise, in situations where you can coast, having the RBS slow the vehicle more than needed and then speed back up uses more energy than it recaptures.


Long story short, if having it on makes you slow sooner and not need to engage the mechanical brakes, fantastic. If having it on makes it easier to control the vehicle because you don't have to ride the brake pedal (like when towing down a hill), fantastic. Use it in those cases.

It's not a one size fits all solution and is a lot more about tailoring the driving behaviors to a style you prefer than it is about gaining a lot of efficiency. Don't think of it as the same sort of system as what you might find on a tesla where increasing the regen actually increases how much regenerative braking occurs.

I found it very useful in moderate snow conditions when paired with 4H: 4-6”, low speed over unplowed roads. I would imagine it would be great in low speed off road driving.

Outside of that, I don’t use it. The lack of a dead zone in pedal response meant way too many little adjustments to “coast” while driving. Not to mention, there’s no dashboard indicator to tell me if it’s also turned on my rear brake lights, a major safety concern of mine. I get better range without it, and it feels less tiring to drive over long distances.

So yeah, I treat it as an off road and snow driving aid only. Neat feature.

Only time I use it is coming down long hills we have out West. Seems to make it easier. I have tried it in traffic and honestly don't really like it. I think it would be okay if I was used to it but I am not. I try and brake really gently and that is really the same in the end.
