Was at @rustyshakelford's dropping off some things to get powder coated and we started talking about my upcoming re-gear/lift kit/skid plate install and gears became to topic of conversation.

He had more than a few sets laying around and he said have you ever seen a M186 and M210 side by side?

All I can say is wow and kudos to the guys running 35/37/40's on the M186 gears...

Given the increased operating temperatures and reduced oil capacity versus previous generations and that a M186 is a 7.3" ring gear means there is a substantial load on it just driving down the road. Wheeling and larger tires adds that much more...

From the 2nd photo, there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference. Then again I don’t really know what kind of difference I should be spotting.

M186 = 7.3"
M210 = 8.3"

About 1/2" smaller all the way around on diameter and the M186 is visibly thinner than the M210. Hard to see in the photos, but easy to see in person.

Thanks for the explanation.

The real advantage of these new gear sets is the stoutness of the pinion shaft. You should compare a 210/220 pinion shaft to an old generation 44 shaft or even a D60 shaft. Pretty amazing how much strength they added to these things.
