M186 Pinion Etching Confusion

I'm swapping out gears on my JLUS and the old pinion is etched with .54, which is very confusing because I thought Dana only uses inch measurements, so this number seems huge. Someone else on this forum had an etch of .0737 and I'm not sure why there would be such a big difference.
