Have not yet been back up to my dealership to inquire about this "feature", The owners manual semi sucks as to relating lots of features they make no mention of.
WTF is this for...........I wanna guess it might be a way to manually shift from gear to gear, but i see no way that one could engage it.............So what is it????

You're asking about the AutoStick feature.

Via a Control/F search, the term "AutoStick" appears 20 times in my 2021 Owner's Manual. The related functionality is explained very clearly, in several sections of the manual.

When in Drive (or D), lightly press the gear lever to the left. You'll now be able to change gears manually, by toggling up (-/Downshift) or down (+/Upshift.)

If you're feeling froggy, the Owner's Manual also explains how to configure the center TFT screen to display the current gear selection, whether you're in Drive or when using the AutoStick feature.

Open that manual and start reading. ;)

OK, I will re-read the contents of my owners manual.............maybe it is indeed in there and I glossed over it. We will see and report back.

You make a great point. They are opposite what they should be!
In my old VW, up was + and down was -
I like manually shifting, but I the only way it makes sense to me is to do the paddle shifter mod. I have the parts waiting on the shelf.

They are correct. Bump forward to downshift, bump rearward to upshift (faster). Considering all the other idiosyncrasies of this vehicle, the ZF auto is fantastic!

It’s all backwards. You have to move your gearshift to the left, when it should go to the right to put your Jeep in MAGA mode.

Make Another Gear Again! 😂

I have a 2008 Miata (with paddle) and works the same as Jeep. It made sense to me, because downshifting when breaking brings all the weight to forward, so push the lever up feels better. For upshifting, car is accelerating and weight goes to backward, pulling the lever feels better. Of course, the paddles are right there and easier, but Miata paddles are spinning with steering wheels, and sometimes faster to reach to the shift. Maybe I would think differently if I had VW, though.

Exactly…

@scootertoo

I will just add that the times I have used this “manual shift mode” is if I am accelerating and then ease up on the gas and the transmission decides to keep it stuck in the lower gear, eg. keeps it in 4th/5th/or 6th gear (which is heating up the whole tranny and engine more than it needs to be) and I put it in the “manual mode” and down shift to my higher gears, eg. 6th/7th/8th gears.

I like to use the PDF version since it allows you import it to Adobe Acrobat to search for topics using search terms. Of course not knowing it’s called autostick means you’d have to read through the automatic transmission section anyway.

The manual says that if you are in neutral, stopped or slowly moving, you MUST press on the brake to shift back into drive. That is NOT the case with my ‘21 JLUR. Pressing the brake to shift from N to D is completely unnecessary.

Well, guess what!!! The info I can now see here in this posting via the PDF file version tells me about the "autostick" operation.
However, after two front to back reviews of my 2025 Jeep Wrangler Owners Manual, I gotta tell ya there is NO PLACE WITHIN THE BOOK..........FRONT TO BACK. That gives me that info. If it's in the printed owners manual for 2025, let me know what page that happens to be.

Best use for this feature is offroading. This is why i just laugh when manual drivers say "they have more control." Not anymore.

My JL doesn't always shift when I want it to when in 4lo, especially if we're constantly going up and down steep grades, which is normal for almost every off road trail in AZ. There are times I'll just drive it like a manual and shift when I want as opposed to letting the computer decide.

And then when you are on certain obstacles while rock crawling, being able to lock it into 1st or 2nd gear, while 2 pedaling, is invaluable. You want me to move forward exactly half an inch? No problem.

They are more backwards than a cross eyed Alabama coon dog. I always end up downshifting when I needed to upshift and upshifting when I needed to downshift.

The manual shifter is still connected to a bunch of electronic wizardry which doesn’t let you do anything too drastic. I mostly use it to shift up in 4lo because my automatic transmission likes to keep the rpm’s higher and I prefer a quieter engine.
