On 2018 JLU Sport 3.6L, I'm getting an error code P0116, coolant temp sensor. The fan's not spinning, coolant level is good. As it idles in the driveway, the temp gauge climbs right up past 220 and would keep going if I didn't shut it off. I'm assuming from this that the sensor (Mopar 68217702AC Coolant Temperature Sensor) should be replaced.

Earlier today whilst driving the Jeep, the fan sounded like it was attached to a P-51 in pursuit of Herman Goering's FW. I parked it, and when I came out and restarted the fan noise did not reoccur. When I got home I checked it and noticed the fan was now off. The Jeep did not overheat, according to the gauge, which I had displayed on the trip home.

Interestingly, the CEL is not coming on for this; I'm finding the code with BlueDriver.

But ... where is the sensor? I've looked all over and can't find it. The sensor is available from Quadratec, who rates it as an 'Intermediate' level task. From that, I am further assuming it's buried somewhere. Otherwise it would be a simple task.

Anyone? Anyone?

@MSteeves

This video will give you the location on a 3.6 Wrangler...
Wowsers.

Same engine, hmmmm? I didn't know that. Well, some re-engineering, obviously.

Thanks for the info, and the clip on the flare removal, too.

Did you ever have any luck on finding the ECT on the JL 3.6L engine? I have searched and searched without having any luck on my own! The Video below isnt correct and doesnt match my 3.6L 2019 JL engine.

JL location is definitely different to the JK. Theres not a single JL youtube talking about this, just JK guys saying "pull out the wheel liner and its right there" ... well its not right there on a JL lol... also making me wonder if chasing the coolant sensor is even the right thing to do for a P0128 Thermostat Rationality in a JL since i went that route from listening to JK guys?

p0128 is a bad thermostat. I've never seen a bad coolant temp sensor on a 3.6.

Duralast from Autozone
I strongly recommend OEM. Mahle or Mopar. That Duralast is made by Motorad and is very likely to stick shut. The OEM fail by running too cold. The Motorad fail hot.

I installed roughly 20 of these during 2020-21 when supply chain issues caused the OEM to be on national backorder for a few years. At least a dozen had to be replaced under warranty within a year. Who know how many of them had problems and just didn't come back to me. They are a bad part.
