Hi all,
Has anyone here gone from a 4xe back to a regular gas JL? Considering trading my 24 Rubicon X out for a new 2026, with either the 2.0 or v6.
-New jeep would have to be an X, meaning 35's, 4.56's, etc.
-Overall, are you satisfied?
-Does the reduced stress from your new jeep make up from the loss of mpg and power?

Long story short, my 2024 Rubicon X 4xe is my favorite vehicle I have ever had, but I do not really trust it after numerous warranty repairs.
It's a real bummer because the MPG is amazing when I am charging on my daily commute, and besides some of the recalls, the EV side of things has been very fun and good. However, I just can't pass up the chance to maybe wipe my hands of it and get into a replacement 26.
-Water pump leak at 6k
-Timing cover oil leak at 10k
-4xe OTA update which bricked the thing on the highway
-68c battery recall which neutered the electric mode
-Headgasket replacement due to more oil leaks at 14k...
-78c sandy engine recall.. passed.. for now
-A/c pump failure at 14k.
-Over 60 days in the shop... It above and beyond qualifies for lemon law.

Considering what I want to do. I have a hearing with the NCDS/FCA this week, and according to the law and time in the shop, plus the number of issues, I might quality for either a buy back or replacement. I have also been in contact with a law firm and they want to take the case, I am just waiting to see how the arbitration goes.

The 4xe is really fun, but I think swapping it out for an xtreme recon jeep would be fun too. Seeking input from those that have had both. Mine doesn't even get great MPG on trips anyway, so as a weekend warrior/adventure rig, I feel like a regular gasser would fit my needs with less stress about battery recalls, bricking, etc. I see many people who get 20mpg+ with the regular 2.0T... mine is usually around 19 mpg or worse. The 600lbs of 4xe stuff hurts my range on long trips when I don't charge.

Current jeep is on 35's, 1 inch lift and bumpstops, drives great as is. Getting an xtreme recon with the deeper gears, nice wheels and factory parts is enticing.

Been eying a few replacement 26's, and do love the new hood.. Would need to decide if I wanted to go basic with the 3.6 or enjoy the better power (but potentially more expensive to fix) 2.0T.

I took the hit and traded my 4xe for a 2025 Willys Xr. Yes the mileage is a lot different but I don’t have a vehicle that’s ready to burst into flames at any time. I got the 3.6 with automatic transmission.
I did it back in November. I didn’t want to wait until it was worthless and no one wanted it.
I was averaging around 13mpg in the winter but that’s mainly due to me living 2 miles from work and my driving is mostly in town.
Now that I added some drop down side steps I’m really enjoying it

i mean, do you enjoy letting it sit at the shop? if no then sell it
I mean, I get it. But there is some nuance here. I got an extended warranty from Mopar, and when it is running well... it's great. Tremendous power, love the regen, roughly 40mpg commuting and charging. I still wish the 4xe got better parts and maybe that new zf trans they teased with more ev power, but oh well.

As it sits right now, it works great, it really comes down to future concerns of reliability.

Exact same boat - ordered a '21 4xe Rubicon direct from the factory. Every recall possible affected it. Too many issues to list, but it was in the shop multiple times every year we owned it. Took it for one final drive in October 2025, to see the fall leaves, after getting it back from a transmission replacement, and the check engine light hit again. Drove to the dealership, had it repaired, and traded it in. We picked up a Nissan Pro4x - nice truck, but not a Jeep. Had the truck for 5 months, went back to a new '26 Willys 3.6 35" package - my wife is happy to be back in a Jeep again.

I purchased my 2023 Rubicon 4Xe and enjoyed it for all the 14,750 miles I was able to drive it, but unfortunately it spent more time in the dealership service department than I expected, at the time I was also looking for a Rubicon 2 Door Gecko and when I located one I pulled the trigger and purchased it and sold my 4Xe and haven’t looked back.

I test drove a 392 just the other day and was actually disappointed in the power coming from my 4xe. Having a turbo and strong electric motors makes the 4xe feel way faster than it should be, and in my opinion a lot more powerful than the other models.

I also didn’t like the gauge cluster on the 392, it seemed a lot lower resolution/quality and maybe even smaller than what we get. I wanted to like the 392, I really don’t know what I’ll do when my lease is up (keeping the 4xe would be insanity).

I feel the same way! My 24 RubiX 4xe is great when it works and even though I have not had all the defects you’ve had, I’m done with the hybrid thing for now. Who knows, in 10 years maybe it’s more reliable but for now, I’m back to ICE Jeeps. I’m picking up my MOAB 392 this Friday. I’ve had the 392 in other vehicles and it’s strong. Also, being a normally aspirated large displacement V8, it’s less complicated than a turbo 4 and less stressed as well to make the power. I don’t feel like I’ll get stranded on the trail with the 392 unlike the 4xe right now.

2026 Willys 2.0T 2DR Hard Top in Mojito built for me!
I ordered my 2026 Jeep soon after the 68C recall for my 2024 4xe was announced. I thought about it for maybe two days before deciding that I didn't need that kind of stress in my life.

The thing that prompted me to trade in my beloved '06 TJ was the Tuscadero color and I figured it was time to go electric. And the 4xe was fine until I found out how unsafe it was.

Strangely enough, it turns out my little green 2-door is the Jeep I should have gotten to begin with. I love it more than I ever loved my 4xe. But Mojito wasn't available then, so it all worked out.

I lemon-lawed my 4xe and bought a used 3.6 to avoid having to ever deal with Stellantis corporate again as much as possible. Paid half what I had paid for the 4xe, and am still 20k under that after all the mods I’ve done (and learnt from).

power is and feels way down with the 3.6, and maybe the 2.0 is a bit less of a shock in that regard. But I value lifting the hood and knowing what is what. And, in hindsight, I’m not sure a Jeep has any business being as fast as it is with the 4xe 😅🤷🏼‍♂️

overall, zero regrets for me. Best of luck!

Personally, I have owned two 2.0 turbos; currently have one. I also have a 2018 Rubi Recon JK w/3.6 pentastar. All have been and are reliable. If MPG is what your major concern is, don’t switch from your 4xe because with the 2.0 or 3.6, MPG is close to the same, at least for me; around 15 city, upwards on 20 highway. It’s just a personal choice; for me I’ve never been a big fan of electrification of any sort; too much to go wrong plus the ability to fuel up in all conditions and locations. Yes, modern gas vehicles have their issues with electronics as well but I’d like to think I could limp home if an electrical component goes out, but of course that depends on the component as well. The other thought is, if you’re 4xe has been a frequent shop resident, maybe getting the issues fixed would mean maybe that you now have a reliable vehicle. It comes down to personal choice but for me it’s gas only; warts and all.

I sold my 23 4xe and bought a 26 Moab 392.

I bought the 4xe partly for the performance, the 392 gives me that.

I do miss the all electric commute to and frame work, unfortunately the 68C update neutered that ability.

I sold the 4xe for a huge loss and don’t regret the decision.

I will say that the 4xe was quicker at low speeds than the 392 feels (with a full battery and engine running). But, the 4xe was just so dang finicky on being quick that most times it was not. The 392 is always ready to deliver.

If I had to select a 2.0 vs 3.6, I’d probably lean towards the 3.6. KISS theory. Both have a very similar power output.

I am one of those folks that didn't have much problem with my 4Xe, granted I don't drive a lot.

on my '21 4Xe Rubicon, apart from 1 ECH failure and usual HV battery recalls, its been flawless. I might be dealing with a small oil leak, but thats a 2.0 problem.

I was going to sell it to Carvana, had an offer for 30k, but instead of that, I am keeping it in the family, and the daughter is going to take that to college. I do expect a HV battery failure at some point.

One reason I am moving to a gasser is, I dont want 68C software to kick in and put me in limp mode coming down from Black bear pass this aug-sep+ I always wanted a 392 lol

Risk of a mechanical failure is always there in any vehicle, I am just de-risking the software part

I have the 2026 Rubicon X with the 3.6 and love it. I could not stand the sound of the 2.0 and i love the acceleration with the 3.6 with the 4.56 gearing. Very satisfied.

68c recall led to my HV battery being replaced last summer. 35 days in the shop.
That's the only non-maintenance service I've needed. I have not noticed any loss of power since 68c, in fact it feels like I have better torque response. Admittedly I had noticed the original battery draining much quicker for a couple months prior to replacement.

On 35s I get about 22 miles of range in town. More than enough for work a couple days per week and errands. And thanks to the current global economy HV charging is considerably cheaper than gasoline. Truly, I've been happy with my 4xe. Only the increased weight bothers me.

The only Wrangler I would consider getting now would be a 2 door, probably with 2.0. I loathe the 3.6, I have seen way too may of them fail. In Wranglers and Chargers. Bottom line, pricing is still too high on Wranglers, hell all cars. So I won't be replacing mine soon.
