Hey Guys! My wife and I are riding through the Badlands in South Dakota today and noticed this noise out of nowhere. Please see the YouTube videos I’ve uploaded.

It only makes this noise under light throttle between 1.4k and 2k RPM, and also when idling it makes a noise that makes it sound like a diesel!

It is performing as expected, and getting down on it and getting the RPM over 2k the noise stops. It has the power you’d expect at any RPM

While Driving
From Idle
Idle - Underneath

Any help on what this might be would be greatly appreciated! Bought it used and has 40k miles on it. Been great except for this big concern today.

Sounds like a lifter to me. Bring it in to have it looked at and hopefully you didn't do any damage to the motor

Sounds like a normal tracto- I mean 2.0L to me. These engines are so noisy any normal "is that noise bad?" questions need to be pretty severe to tell if it's an actual issue or not.

I was thinking the same, but to me a lifter issue would persist across any RPM.

It looks like some other folks with the i4 have said that noise at a low RPM (also under light throttle) causes the timing chain tensioner’s pivot bracket to rattle against the timing chain housing. And that’s exactly where this noise is coming from.

An example of someone else who had a similar noise:

Timing Tensioner

If that’s the case I stand the risk of the chain jumping teeth and misaligned timing.
