JLU 2.0 Chain Tensioner Replacement Tips?

Currently a bit over 94,000mi on my 2018 2.0 JLU with ESS/E-torque. I have an AllData monthly subscription and setting up to tackle the chain tensioner replacement. Anyone else do this job? I see at least one thread but not many others.

  1. Cylinder Head Cover
    AllData states to remove the cylinder head cover but I want to avoid this as it requires replacing the high-pressure fuel line. How much harder is the job without removing this?

  2. Vibration Damper
    Can regular tools be used to remove this or do I need to buy 2054400090/ESS or 2024800090/Etorque Damper, Holder Shallow and Deep? If any can recommend non-Mopar cheaper specialty tools I'd appreciate it.

  3. Timing Chain
    While chains do stretch and this would be a good WYAIT, is a chain change imperative (e.g. how much longer would a timing chain last before a replacement is needed?)

  4. Oil Pump Chain Tensioner
    Also a WYAIT, critical to replace the oil pump chain tensioner and or chain as well?

  5. Oil Seal Installer 9506
    Seeing a range of prices for oil seal installer 9506 for timing chain cover ranging from $13-120. Can I use a generic tool instead?
    eBay to the rescue, used 9506 for $13 + free shipping
I also plan on updating this as I go to help others. Following the AllData plan there is a lot to remove to replace the guides/tensioner.

Subscribed as I am in NC and about to tackle the same job on my 2020 (non e-torque) and was curious about the head cover needing to come off. Got a video of your noise? Please update here what you end up doing.

Plan is to hopefully do it this weekend. Weather hasn't been cooperative over here (lots of rain). Also had some issues with backordering of parts so went down to my local dealership and picked up all the parts. Cost about $50 more to the total. I also decided not to touch any of the chains since I am avoiding having to remove the cylinder head cover.

If you do not remove the cylinder head cover then you can skip buying Timing Chain Guide Upper - 5048150ab since you won't be able to get to it.

Some of the bolts also require angular torque (Hex Flange M14x1.50x40 Damper to Crankshaft Bolt - 6509029AA)

Update, had to postpone the job since to remove the vibration damper without 2024800090/Etorque Damper, Holder Deep (for those with Etorque) wasn't possible). The damper and crankshaft pulley rotate pretty easily and it's hard to get something on the damper to prevent it from moving. Using my Ryobi impact at highest (500ft/lbs supposedly) didn't even budge the bolt so I need to breaker bar it.

I was looking at the 9707A and 9709 Miller Tool cause it also has 4 prongs and is much cheaper in price but didn't want to putz around buying random tools to see what cheaper method will work. Ended up finding the Deep tool on ebay for $140.00 shipped. If you DON'T have e-torque then ZKTOOL makes the shallow damper holder for $100 - https://www.amazon.com/ZKTOOL-Damper-Shallow-Wrangler-2054400090/dp/B0DFLR22X6/

The deep one is much harder to find.

Damper Bolt is a 7/8". Most of the other bolts were a range of metrics (10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm). You need at least one deep socket (15mm for one of the bracket bolts) or a ratcheted wrench end. Definitely need some extensions at least a 3 and a 6". Disassembling the front end to get to the cover was pretty straight forward. There also appears to be plenty of room to work in from the front.

Note the OIL PAN BOLTS require e-Torx sockets I only had an E12 but it still had play so they're either an E10 or E11 perhaps.

Thanks. Getting the cover off and on may be a struggle especially once you put RTV on it and you have 5-10mins to get it on and then 30-45mins to tighten it to spec in the correct sequence. The water pump pulley and Motor Generator Unit are semi in the way. It'll take a lot of finnagling I can also understand why they want you to remove the cylinder head cover to get more top end room.

Looks like you can remove the water pump (and AC compressor) to get more right end room but you have to drain the system. Though that sends better than removing the cylinder head and replacing fuel lines, etc....

So, the Dealership im working with is great, they are replacing the timing chain and all the other shit with it under warranty, I had them change our the extra stuff since we are already there although i had to pay for those parts.

Did you end up successfully doing this with the head cover on? Any photos or tips if so? Did the a/c system need opened up?
