Pick a budget and start from there..
I did a 1000 watt amp and a pair of JL Audio stealth boxes, bar was 6x9 and replaced the front dash speakers...expensive if you pay someone to do it all.

I would recommend reading through these two great post by forum member @Jebiruph
I went with his recommendations (Infinity Reference REF-375TX in the upper dash, factory speakers in the lower dash and Infinity Kappa 62ix 6.5" speakers installed in SSV adapters in the soundbar (all wired with negative phase/polarity) and still using the factory radio. ) and think it is well worth the $300+ to get better sound. But if you want BASS you'll need an amp and sub.

I have the factory Alpine system and upgraded to the Terra Acoustics upper dash speakers. Just the addition of tweeters was an amazing difference to my ears.

Unfortunately, I just noticed that a bit of anodizing on the aluminum trim ring flaked off today after a month of being installed and now it's bugging the living piss out of me. Not the QC I was expecting from a $250 pair of speakers, but love them otherwise ?

Every ear is different and your best bet is to go by your local specialty retailer and installer and see what they can offer. I've done installs with replacing the speakers with something better all the way up to a full replacement of everything after the OEM 8.4 radio.

They just started selling new rings in custom colors. $25 and you can cover up whatever is going on with yours.

Thanks and yeah, I've thought about that, but the rings on their website are not accurately pictured and look nothing like the nice low-profile beveled ones that came with the set (loses the OEM-look imo). I'm hoping for a way I can at least spin the blemish away from me, or somehow get a replacement grille.

Since the tweeter is part of the grill, you’d probably need that whole piece. Have you asked them??

I got the bronze ones to match my 392 accents. Yes, it contrasts the silver stock look, but I thought the bronze was kinda cool.

I keeping hearing about negative polarity (on Google searches and a few YouTube videos). Should I NOT expect + to connect to +, and - to connect to -? I'm confused, I'm no pro, but installed door/trunk/dash speakers in the past and never ran into this?

Sometimes a manufacturer will swap polarity on a given speaker for various reasons, and you can hook up the new speakers in any way that you choose. The best way would be to hook them up, and listen to them each way and go from there.

I did not run into this problem. I ordered metra connectors from Crutchfield (Metra 72-7902 speaker wiring adapters) which are plug n play with the factory connectors. Ended up with the correct polarity. But like @lashlee said it's always best to listen to the speakers before securing them into place.
