Here is what I suggest, and is what I'm about to do. I am making more of a "T" for mine, and running an Angled/Slotted flat bar up the middle so that I have many spots to attach my hoist to find that single balance point. I assume it could work for an "H" as well, but I'm not too sure.

You might want to check out some commercially available lifts to see where their center balance points are. I'm not suggesting you buy their's, just take their center points into consideration along with your own research.

This looks darn close to the Lange lift with the Topsy rear bar mod. I don’t have mine on a single point cable so I don’t know the approximate balance point.

this is what I pieced together for mine. 1" square tubing, uses 1" webbing in the front. goes on Topsy hooks in back. tactical belt buckle on the webbing. 1.5" Webbing in the center to attach to the hook via a 3/8 bolt shackle. Boxed webbing sewn by machine and hand.

try not to mind the ugly hole in the ceiling, it will look pretty once I can create something for it to look nice again.

I was looking at doing something similar. My plan was to find the center point by lifting it by hand (or with a bottle jack) from the inside. If the front lifts before the back, move center point back. If back lifts first, move point forward. Then just repeat until center is found.

I use a Jbarr Lift that has a single cable. Thus relies on a center point to lift evenly. It does use straps that run from back window to door.

My top is on right now, but the bar is way back on the top when I lift. I want to say, 18 inches from back. But, due to the straps, I lift with window open.

I’ll try to get a measurement today.

So here is my set up and measuring from the front to back its 29". I am using the topsy brackets and straps. There are two eye bolts. The first one is to hold the lift level by itself, the second is to hold the top level. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks guys. Main deason I'm set on single is that is what I had for my JK and just building the part that actually connects to the top. Set up worked great on the JK

I came across this ; I made my hard top hoist the same way, for the same reason.
I'll determine the point of balance by lifting slightly, move the CG point as required.
I made the hoist for my JK, but traded before I could get it squared away. Now, the JL gets the benefit of the hoist. The gutters on the JL top make it easier to shift the roof racks for that sweet spot. Now, if only it would stop raining...
