For now I've decided to stop fiddling with the RGB halos. It should have been easy to fit it into a case, or at least a ribbon connector, but it's turning out not to.

I'm sticking with the Zero2Go Omini for sleep and power management and our old reliable Waveshare 2 Channel CAN adapter. It all secures down nicely and fits within an enclosed box.

is this a single Can ? are you planning on running two of them ?
Yes, it's just a single can interface. And, no, just one.

or have you determined that you can accomplish what you want to do from one bus only?
Exactly. I'm not 100% sure on what I will use this for, but the idea of power control of the PI comes to mind. I bought the version that has two switched high current outputs for this reason.

My idea is that this low power device can be listening to the can-c bus, fully power off the Pi after some timeout of engine off, assuming that the Pi will do a safe shutdown using it's own scripts. Then on ignition on, it will restore power to the Pi.

And, another thought is that I can use this to handle remote commands from a phone. I really like the idea of remote lock/unlock and monitoring via my own app. Perhaps one day we will even figure out remote start.

have you seen the HighPi Pro case ?
has fan on side not top of case

PiShop.us has them

I briefly looked at the HighPi Pro just before choosing the GeeekPi Case (the version of their case without any internal fan). When it came to available space, the GeeekPi's measurements were specified a little bit differently (as having 41.2mm of internal height) but it turned out that it offered a bit more stacking space for boards than the HighPi Pro did.

HOWEVER...

At the time, I was focused exclusively on height, so I did not take into consideration that the HighPi Pro also provided a side fan. I also didn't consider that the HighPi Pro could run with the top removed. Or that protection for the topmost layer might be supplemented with their stackable acrylic case.

Looking through the rest of their catalog, I think I can save a small amount of vertical space by using their Zero Prototyping pHAT instead of the bulkier header that's attached to the Makerspot Prototyping Board HAT. The pHAT has a passthrough connector which would allow me to place the prototype board anywhere in the stack that I wanted. The Makerspot HAT is designed to cap off the very top of the stack, giving no ability to to be repositioned elsewhere.

The layout of the Zero Prototyping pHAT doesn't support using a DIP package, which I need for the logic level converter. But I could probably hang the low voltage side off of the edge of the board, and then mate a right-angle connector to the pins on the high voltage side. Or that could end up being structurally weak. I guess I'd have to play around with that and see what might work.

Okay, you've given me some ideas to play around with! I may not yet have to make some of the compromises that I really didn't want to make with this. Thanks!

UPDATE: Parts on order.

Hey @jmccorm

I was bored at work for a few so I started running the 4 mile loop looking for oil temp / pressures... This still eludes me.

While doing that, i noticed the manual gear selector was showing when you where in neutral and reverse. I took a further look at the data and found Park and Drive use the same data bytes.

I have updated the spreadsheet for these... but, I wonder if you can look at if these gear values show when you are manually selecting a gear, or what that looks like. Could you do another quick capture of running through the manual selection modes?

For the two automatic transmission messages I identified, it doesn't matter if a gear (1-8) was manually selected or automatically selected by the transmission, it would always represent what gear the vehicle was actually in. My guess is that this one would be the same. Still...

Right now, due to weather, the roads are nearly empty. But here in the next day or two I'll see if I can get out on the road and recorder some more data. Perhaps automatic for the first half, manual for the second. OH! Which reminds me, I said I was going to post a new set of data anyhow, so this needs to be done.

OK, will do.

I did a couple of cold drives this morning and logged them for all of us to inspect.

The very-cold drive was 28F when I started it and after a 1/4 driveway, it was probably a 5 mile drive in the country.

The in-town was a restart after about an hour stop and a couple of miles of signals.

After @Drdyer9051 recommended the HighPi Pro case, I continued looking around PiShop.us to see if they had anything else worthwhile. I happened to stumble across this jewel:

Modular Raspberry Pi 4 Case - Black

This is a modular case that can be extended vertically in increments of 10mm, all the way up to an extra 50mm of enclosed space. I placed an order for a case, extensions, and screws... so here's hoping this turns out even better than the open-case design I had ordered.

Also, while I was there, I happened to notice that they had some Raspberry Pi 4 kits that weren't sold out. It wasn't one of their front-page items, so I guess they've been hiding it? If anyone is interested in a Raspberry Pi 4B in either 2GB ($76) or 8GB ($106), here's a link:

Raspberry Pi 4B Budget Kit 2GB / 8GB

Jump on it quick while it's still there!

I don't like how this trip went, so I'll only keep it here for a few days.

This was a trip to a pharmacy about a mile away, a short wait in the drive-through, and then the drive back using manual gear selection on an automatic transmission. (As requested.)

I occasionally go in and out of 4-wheel drive to get through a bank of sleet or snow, but overall, everything should jive with that description. Here's the link.

I'm still trying to find oil pressure and temperature. So frustrating...

I did just find this tidbit about using OBD-II pids on another forum. I'm going to try and use this to help.

It has been my finding that the math for understanding obd-II data is also the same math for can messages.

Just a small caution that the other discussion was in relation to the JK. The ECU in the JL is more evolved, and up until now, I haven't seen it's math done the same way as is done for OBD-II PIDs.

I've seen the work you've done in finding the other temps, so I'm pretty sure that this one really is more difficult, and that you've got the skills to find it if it is encoded in any reasonable manner. Your tool which graphs messages would seem to be perfect for finding candidates which continue to rise after a cold start.

This was a success! The data in 0x093 does show you using the manual gear selections. I just have to add 7'th and 8'th gear in.
