I am usually very good with putting tools back where they belong, picked that up from my aviation tech guy back in the day. So, this is a mystery to me, I wonder if its still hanging from the '21 diff cover lol

I thought it was just a joke until it happened to me.

A few months ago I was doing an oil change on my daily. 20 min job no biggy. I spilled a small amount of fresh oil on the valve cover. To fully clean it, there is a vacuum line or some sort in the way. Me being anal, I had to loosen two 10mm bolts to get that line out of the way so I could fully wipe everything clean.

Dropped that 10 mm socket. Next thing I know, I was dropping the front bumper to retrieve it. 20 min job turn into a 2 hour fiasco.

That's the way it is sometimes. The old saying is you're just one twisted bolt away from turning a 30 minute job into an all day nightmare. I've known mechanics who were real good at getting out twisted off bolts.

I can say I've never lost a 10mm, but then all of my professional career was with SAE tools. I did manage to lose a SnapOn flex head ratchet one time, never knew where it went. In the case of a lost socket, sometimes a good magnet helps.

But then one time I took off an EGR valve, being careful to not drop the little stainless steel gasket but I dropped it anyway. After 30 minutes of searching through the wires and hoses with a light I found it. I fed my long magnet down there, and discovered it was non magnetic stainless steel. I managed to hook it with a long piece of wire.

My wife, who doesn't even know what a socket is found one for me once. Peering down into the engine compartment through a tangle of wires and hoses she says, "what is this round thingy?" I was only half listening, struggling with a stubborn wiring issue and she adds "it says 10mm on it".
