Thinking about adding one to my rig but I’m wondering what uses it has served others?

Me too... a bigger screen than my iPhone for Gaia Maps but not so much to block my 8.4 OEM screen.

Do you need a cellular capable one for GPS? But you don’t need actual cell service like Verizon or AT&T right?

That's a good question. Looking on the Apple site it appears the non cellular models do not have GPS.

https://www.apple.com/ipad-mini/specs/

However I have this bookmarked to enable the iPad to gain GPS functionality without a cellular subscription.

https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-GLO-B...0e-9d96-07955b6bc9bd&pd_rd_i=B07M9CZYTD&psc=1

Curious if anyone has gone this route?

For the cost of that Garmin unit, might as well go with the Cellular enabled iPad mini…

Except now you have a monthly subscription. Or maybe you don't have to activate for GPS... IDK?

For me I would just use my iPhone hotspot for internet. That Garmin unit would be paid for in about 9 months.

I do use Gaia Maps on my iPhone but it has GPS even when out of cellular range.

The iPad mini is $150 more for the equivalent cellular model.

I know you can buy an unlocked one from Best Buy and not have to activate the cellular function

I've considered this as well, and I don't know if cellular is really worth it because at least for me, the places I go NEVER have cell coverage so it would be pointless anyway.
You can still use a non cellular model, by just downloading the maps to the device prior to leaving for a trip. It is just as effective and what most people do.

Yes I download the maps ahead of time on my iPhone so I don't need cellular because the GPS still works.

The way I see it... you can buy a cellular iPad for an additional $150 or buy the Garmin for $100 that is not tied to just one device. Love someone to explain a better way.

Garmin GLO is more accurate than the cellular GPS in the iPads. I use the GLO paired with my iPad mini for navigation, which frees up my phone for media streaming. Works beautifully.

Are you talking GPS for trails or for every day usage?

Any other uses you’ve used the iPad for?

This too. I take the GLO with me when backpacking and use it for GPS signal instead of relying on my iPhone’s aGPS. It extends the phone battery life considerably. It’s a very handy piece of equipment and you don’t have the monthly subscription costs of another cell service.

For off road use that’s my setup. I know for cellphones you still have GPS capabilities even without cell service, you just have to have the maps downloaded beforehand. I don’t know if the iPads have the aGPS in them too. I use a non cellular iPad mini Bluetooth paired with the Garmin GLO, I just download the maps I need before my trip.

Plus it’s great for an e-reader, or I’ll load a few movies on it. I use my iPad mini for travel, daily book reading, etc. If I need internet access on it outside of Wi-Fi I just hotspot to my iPhone.

I used that setup in my JK, worked awesome! I permanently installed the Garmin in the sport bar near the XM antenna. Garmin ships a super long usb cord with the gps. My JL has the 8.4 & Gaia works on CarPlay…..so didn’t re-install it. But it worked great, the iPad auto connected to the gps every time & worked great!
