Identifying with your engine - a fairly new phenomenon

I've owned Wranglers since the 3.8 minivan engine. There was only one choice (and...it wasn't good). The differentiator was the platform: Sport, Sahara, Rubicon - and that's how the owners "self-identified". Even when the 2.0T was introduced the emphasis was still on the platform. But, now, not so much.

Have you noticed that given the new choices (Ecodiesel, 392. 4xe) the emphasis has shifted to the engine chosen versus the model?

Just like Bronco owners differentiate between those whose engine has blown up, and those with an engine that still has to blow up... ?

The only people that identify by engine are those that care more about the Jeep then what they do with it.

When in 4 low your engine choice makes little difference.

I agree, with the exception of the 2 door vs 4 door crowd.

I think the 2 door crowd is happy they still sit at the kids table during the holidays . I remember my 2.5L 2 door TJ. Going from a 4.0L XJ to that…. Holy crap I couldn’t take my dog with us anymore.

In this case, that amounts to about 90% of all owners.

I can relate. These days, 911 owners are only a small percentage of Porsche owners, but they think the new Porsche SUV owners have somehow "violated" the intent of the marque. In truth, the sales to non-911 owners literally saved the company - just like non-offroaders did for Jeep.

This is not new, it just took a break when there was only one engine. Before the JK it was 4 cyl vs 6 cyl.
