Our 2017 Cherokee got the dreaded Check 4WD light. Sure enough it's the PTU. Right in time for the extended service plan to kick in.

My wife had a choice of driving our new '23 Willys XR or the '02 Dakota. She chose the Willys. She came back home yesterday evening with a big smile, saying she really like driving the Willys. It handled real well, has enough power for her and the brakes work nicely, too. Her only concern is her friends riding in it as most are tiny Asian women....

I may have lost my Jeep...

I'd have to agree with her. My 2022 Willys XR is the most fun-to-drive vehicle I've had since the 944 Porche I bought when I was in Germany many decades ago. Totally opposite optimizations, obviously, but the same level of fun.

I carry a folding stepstool for the times my mom has to ride in it, it *is* a stretch to get into.

Put some AMP Research steps on it and wave good bye to it.

This needs a hotline husbands can call... counselors... maybe a telethon.

"Has your wife started driving your Jeep? Are you feeling the loss of your pride and joy? Afraid to confront her to try and get it back? Now, there's help. Call 1-800-293-5337. That's 1-800-BYE-JEEP. Get the help your emasculated ego needs. Operators are standing by..."

Sounds like a great opportunity to get yourself a new Jeep, not seeing the problem here. :)
That's what I am thinking! Time to turn that '02 Dakota into a '24 Willys!

A quick search to figure out what "PTU" meant led to some bulletins about a recall, so maybe a free fix? Fix and trade, that's my motto. :)

Fix and trade is a thought, for sure. The PTU (Power Transfer Unit) was recalled for a large number of 14~17 Cherokees, but not ours. The initial recall was for failed PTUs, then there was another to update software for those not actually recalled. Ours was not one of them, so when this one failed, they'll need to replace the unit. Part alone is about $2K.
Our extended warranty is 8/85, so we have some time to think about it. Would rather not have to put out a lot more $ right now, right after buying the Willys.

You typed this out while your wife was nearby or watching over your shoulder, didn't you? ? I'll say it was sabotage to get you to hand over the keys to the Willys and you fell for it ?

Try DOTO, that may work. My wife is definitely not a fan of the naked jeep

Teach her a lesson by coming home with a 392.
