I see the irony...
But, didn't Ford help produce "Jeeps" in WWII (Ford GPW)? Willys won the contract but Ford also produced a number that were used. The Army wanted all the parts interchangeable so Ford actually had to license the ability to build certain parts from Willys.

Yeah, that's more or less the gist of it, all the auto makers in the US were making the same vehicle to help contribute to the war effort. Willy's thought they won the contract with their design, was not able to pump out vehicles quite at the rate the federal government wanted them, so they called in the other automakers to start making the original WWII jeep so that the US armed forces could have enough general purpose vehicles during the war. As for the uniformity, that is true as well, though I can't remember if Ford actually had to pay a license or not during the war. I do know that ford tried to continue manufacturing a civilian version of the jeep after the war, but it didn't work out so well for them.
