So as i’m gearing up for my axle swap I’m also looking at new tires, and then my girlfriend was saying if I’m getting new tires why not look at new wheels too. So i’m down the rabbit hole again.

Current setup:
Fifteen52 Turbomac HD: 26lbs
Kenda klever rt: 70lbs
Total: 96lbs

At first I was just looking at tires, the toyo rt trail or ridge grappler. So 75lbs for the toyo and 80lbs for the ridge grappler both in a 37x12.50r17.

Wheel im looking at is the KMC KM549 which weighs 31 lbs.

So with the toyo rt trails it’ll be 106lbs per corner. Will 10lbs of added rolling mass really affect things?

Depends on what matters to you.

Are you looking at it from a component wear perspective, engine power, braking or driving dynamics?

Increased weight will affect all criteria to a greater or lesser extent.

For me most important was drivability. From that perspective my 37inch 112lb per corner setup is just fine given this is my daily and can do up to black and red trails.

The other criteria is lower as I'm looking to upgrade my steering setup, ball joints and brakes. Engine power is not touched but have 4.88 gearing and the high intertia CFII flywheel.

I believe the weight of wheels and tyres matters.
I changed from 255/75r17 km2 (stock) to 305/70r17 Maxxis razr. I can feel the it affect accelerate and brake.
I won’t think JL can’t handle it. It will depends on who you drive or where you drive.
To me, the biggest impact is increased fuel consumption. (But acceptable)

another potential impact would be the pressure on axle, tie rod and drag link (also need to include the factor of wheel offset)

It’s more from a braking perspective to be honest. I’ll be chewing through the stock balljoints in the new axles and replace it with dynatrac balljoints when the time comes. I’ll be running it with 4.10s for a little and see how it feels as well. I was just sort of feeling like it was splitting hairs over 10lbs on an already heavy vehicle. Now if it were going up to 120lbs i’d be a little worried about it.

Steering will get replaced with either RPM Steering or steer smarts as parts wear as well.

The offset will be the same as my current wheels. So i’m not too certain that there’s going to be an insane amount of wear on the stock ball joints.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'm doing ball joints (think teraflex or dynatrac), steersmarts with flipped draglink and looking at the teraflex big brake kit.

For power steering looking at PSC if my budget can swing it.

Right now I drive around my powersteering limitations and brake conservatively.

Goodluck!

Does rolling mass really matter???? IMO not worth the brain cells to hassle about it. Purchase the tire wheel combo you like and enjoy the ride.

Lots of people go bigger and don’t touch the gear ratio. Then they comment about loss of acceleration or sluggish performance. Speedometer is now off, shift points are changed, mpg is way off because speedo isn’t correct, etc.

Yeah it felt like I was splitting hairs over a few pounds. I’m planning 4.88 after all is said and done.
