I’ve been trying to search on how the front or rear elockers work. Not in reference to the switch on how to turn them off and on, but how the whole elocker mechanism works. If someone can point me in the right direction with resources I would greatly appreciate it.

There a YouTube tear down, but IIRC, a spring holds a toothed gear off the case, and an electromagnet engages it.

I’ll try to find it for you.

So if one is inoperable it’s likely the electromagnetic mechanism that engages and disengages? Has anyone had any issues with the carrier itself?

You are actually having an issue? What are the symptoms?

I bought a rubicon axle with an “inoperative locker” and I’m trying to diagnose it. The electromagnetic plunger was separated, but the carrier looks fine. I am trying to understand how the carrier works in order to see if it is still operational.

I think @chevymitchell is the resident expert.

The large magnet energizes with magic.

Then the magnet pushes the locker plate assembly down with said magic. The position of the plate is what determines if the dash shows lock or unlock.

The plate then pushes on 5 pawls. These 5 pawls lock the spider gears together, thus removing the open diff option. Once this happens, then both axle shafts must turn with the ring gear.

Pawls shown below. The inner plate mounts to the "U" shapes you see. Then this inner plate spins inside the outer plate. The magnet pushes both plates into the carrier housing locking the spiders together.

Thank you,
Does anyone have a blow out diagram of the internals of the carrier?

by the looks of my carrier it does seem as if the internals are broken due to all prongs not protruding evenly.

Yeah, if those don't push down and spring back up, then it's jacked up.

I haven't seen any factory 220 locker carrier parts available. I've only seen diagrams and parts for the open diffs and LSD's.

Checked my AllData account. It has the LSD overhaul in the section for the locker, and no additional internal parts list, everything on the locker parts wise is listed as part of assembly.

@chevymitchell any idea why the main cross pin is drilled in the center with another small pin inside of it. This is my destroyed rear locker, I tore into it trying to diagnose what happened. You can see the pin is broken, but that’s right were it was drilled and I assume had a smaller pin in it??

The cross pins look thin.

I don't think there would have been a pin in there. I also can't think of why there would be a hole in it. I'd need to take one apart and look at it. This picture is tough to make a determination. Off the top of my head, I don't have any good answer to your question. I'll keep it in mind though.
