Back in the 70's, adding a pint of diesel to the engine oil, let the engine idle until the tick went away, and then change oil worked for stiff hydraulic lifters in Ford V-8's.

I bet that stuff smells very similar to diesel. Have you ever smelled Marvel Mystery oil? Same thing.

Not just Fords, also an occasional gallon of diesel with a tank of gas to clean the top end.
Saw the article yesterday, some diesel guys do swear by it, so is it or is it not.

They may have changed the formula. I literally haven't smelled it since the 70's.

I think there is some science to diesel as an oil additive. Does it have a lot of detergents? Oil quality in the 70's was nothing like today's oils. Gunk build up in the engine could be removed with detergents.

I'm sure there are much better products out there today, but I feel engine gunk build up has been greatly reduced in modern engine with modern oils.

I remember when Mobil 1 synthetic was released. It was more expensive. I had a car that was check the gas, fill the oil. I could only afford to keep adding what ever was cheap.

I carried one of these in my car

Well, it was real lubricating diesel then, occasionally drain the oil, fill adding some diesel, let idle a bit and drain the new now black oil- complete oil change. Put some in the gas to clean the fuel system and top end. It worked.

some still used non detergent oil, OMG - pull valve covers and the heads were literally caked.
