I would not hack up the factory harness. You’ll have problems down the road with it and they wouldn’t be covered by the factory warranty.

I just looked at Curt Manufacturing's website for their PN #13432 (eTrailer's distributor PN is 9883544). When Curt updated their website for PN 13432 to include the 2018 Wranglers, they made an effort to ensure they did not specify the PN would fit 'All 2018 Jeep Wranglers' (as they had done so in the past). In fact, they went so far as to list out each 2018 model (e.g. Sport, Rubicon) along with the manufacturer's family indicator (i.e. JK). But they still have not updated their website to include any JL models. Hence, I would not pull too much of anything until their engineering department has verified the assembly, when mounted to a JL frame, will in fact support the structural loading found when towing. It is just not right for eTrailer, or anyone else, to publish that an aftermarket structural part is compatible with any vehicle until the designer/manufacturer has published it's engineering findings. There is just too much at risk to do otherwise.

Several posts later:

They can't both be true.
Actually, both are true...

Presently, the only JL specific wiring harness (it's a 4 and 7 pin combo) that is available that requires no tampering or splicing of wiring, that will not affect your warranty in a negative way, is made available by Mopar. It is not a true plug and play offering. That particular OEM wiring harness, part #
82215398AB retails for over $220.00.

Part # 8221539AB
Jeep Wrangler JL Hitch s-l1600

A quality trailer receiver hitch for the JL will run you $100+.

And yes, Hopefully, in the next few months, Mopar/some other manufacturer will actually come up with a true, completely plug and play offering. A say 4 and 7 combo, a 7 pin or a 4 pin alone offering that requires just unplugging and plugging in two or so plastic connectors (true plug and play) and you are done with the install. Presently, there is no such true plug and play offering as there is for the Wrangler JK.

@Craigb , moparmaga and mopower666...

Would you say that the loose end of "blue" wire for trailer brakes on a factory install would probably be located/ found coiled up just under the glove compartment? Knowing this will/would be helpful to any JL/JLU owner with the factory wiring harness that might consider setting up elec. brakes..

Got to give you guys credit for getting the install done. You were all very wise to have purchased and used the OEM wiring harness versus trying to jury rig in an aftermarket, 4 pin connector trailer harness. The JL is not as forgiving as a JK. The $ you spent on the OEM harness are well spent $.

Oh, about my earlier post here. What I was getting at is that for most they would be best just paying for the Trailer Tow and HD Electrical Group package. Most guys don't have the fortitude, know how, patience, time, etc. as you three have. Congrats on your installs and saving the $ !
The flash on the attached photo killed the colors, though I assume this is the connection for adding a electronic brake controller. It is a blue and white wire that is on the exterior side of the passenger front footwell. You can see the bundled wires for the AUX ports in the background. If this isn't for the controller, I have no idea what it would be.

Barry... Thanks! .... YOU took the time to provide very helpful info / to give, versus coming here to take....to be disruptive... to stir up chitt for no good reason.

Without a doubt some fellow JL owner that wants to install a brake controller will see your post / pic here and put it to good use.

This is very simple. We all have our reasons for making our choices. Neither is entirely wrong and we all have to live with our decisions.

I do believe that when there is a disagreement such as this it is done so unintentionally. One tries to put across a point as to why they made their choice and they feel it is a better choice. Then another does the same. Then it ends up in a pissing contest.

Personally I chose (@OldGuyNewJeep is that right? :like:) the trailer package because of the auxiliary switches. I don't even know if I will use them. My thought, "it is better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them". On my JK I went aftermarket and setup the hitch myself. Either way it was my choice and anyone can agree or disagree. Bottom line it is coming out of my pocket.

Do you know where the brake wire is on the factory install? Somewhere under the dash? Bare wire or is there a connector already in place? Thanks. My JL is almost ordered.

That is probably just the wire to the rear plug, which is great to have. You still have to find power and ground.

I have no clue how to hook these up so I am just talking straight out of my bung hole right now. My thought was that you would need that wire to hook into a brake controller and the other lines from the brake controller would then be hooked into one of the AUX switches?

That would be my thought as well. I too have never hooked up a brake controller!

I have installed them. When the manufacture prewirers and leaves a plug, then you just plug the controller in. Plug and tow. It seems that Jeep didn't do this which seems odd. Really the only reason to go to a 7 pin plug is for trailer brakes. I tow a T@B teardrop trailer with my JK that is around 2000# and has trailer brakes. Wire install on the JK was a bit of work. Trailer brakes are you friend.
