My 2-door 21 Willys was hit in front of my house tonight.

The car hit the spare tire on the back and took off. No visible damage aside from the tire being scrapped up and part of the other cars headlight being torn off and laying on the ground next to it.

They hit the rear of the Jeep hard enough it moved a foot or so forward.. Wondering what type of damage I should check for? Rear tail gate operation, spare tire holder. What other things should I look and make sure aren’t bent?

Thanks in advance

If it' has an automatic transmission I would definitely be checking that it's not damaged. The parking pawl in it could be damaged.

Check if it pushed in the back of the tailgate. My daughter got rear ended in her JK with a steel bumper and the bumper was fine but the spare tire was crooked because it bent the tailgate where the spare tire mount connected. The wheel and tire were fine, and the bumper wasn’t even changed. The other car was totaled.

That is a fairly hard hit to do what you are describing. I would take it to a body or frame shop and have it assessed.

Just tell the insurance company you'll be needing new coil springs, high performance shocks, adjustable LCA's, custom driveshaft, rear bumper with tire carrier of course and if it's not too much trouble all new wheels. I'm joking.

I hope your jeep turns out to be ok.

I am optimistic your damage will be minimal. Last year while overlanding I backed into a pine tree pretty hard…hitting the spare tire. It hit hard enough I expected a damaged tailgate…at a minimum. Instead I only found residue and sap from the tree on the tire. While I have the factory reinforced tailgate, the hit was anything but a slight bump.??. Good luck!
