Hesitation while driving

Was driving on the Freeway tonight in Hybrid mode and the engine was running and it started to hesitate while keeping at steady 65. I could feel it do it about a half dozen times then the check engine light came on and I slowed down immediately to exit and then the issue and the engine light went away. We stopped to get the kid some food and I was mentally prepared for the Jeep not to start but it did and nothing happened again on the way home

Was the hesitation from a back and forth on what seems to be the vehicle attempting to switch from Gas to Electric when the battery had been depleted?

could be for sure when I let of the pedal it seemed to fix itself and has not come back driving around today
