To go along with the books, I highly recommend the FunTreks 4x4 offroad trails app. It complements the books nicely. I downloaded all the offline maps for the trails, and had those to go off of when I lost signal out on the trail.

I have used this app all over CO and UT.

The advice above is spot on. The San Juans are beautiful. Ouray / Silverton area is my favorite place on earth. I usually get an annual summer trip there, but this year projects at work have me stuck in the midwest.

are those pictures real? is that place real?

I'm going to follow this thread closely. I've wanted to go out to CO my whole life. I keep telling myself this is the year but it's just me and I never seem to take time to make plans. one of these days.
The pics are photoshopped. It's horrible here, stay in major metropolitan areas ;)

Hey all! Admittedly did not read the entire thread. However, I can tell you I took Engineer pass to Animas Forks and then California Gulch to Corkscrew Gulch today. I am going to reverse in the AM. Lake City to Ouray is OPEN. I recommend highly Stay away from Stony as a way to get to Silverton. Pole Creek is high as of 07/08. Saw it first hand and it’s ugly. Lady died in late June trying to evacuate a swamped Jeep. Early August = Game on for most SW CO trails... I think.

Thanks for the update.

Question - I'll be doing a lot of tent camping on the trails that allow dispersed camping. My concern is that the snow conditions won't allow for it on some trails. I've seen some pics where the trail is cut through like 5-10 feet of snow. Maybe that's just in certain area IDK. Just want to get an idea what to expect.

You can find spots. The snow is only at the highest elevations. It is melting fast.
