correct, we have tore the rear apart 4 times, inspected the gears, pinion, alignment, all correct, did find the driver side axle shaft had a slight twist to it, replaced that, thought the spyder gears as well, replaced locker, bearings have been changed 4 times, even went as far to change out the housing, still having the issue. It’s only when you let off the gas. The sound can be heard in the rear.
Sounds can transmit down the driveshaft and mislead you.

Another person had mentioned this and our next goto was the transfer case. We ran across this thread while searching and he was having the same problem as us. In his video it sounds very similar. Was wondering what his solution was or if it got fixed, as we didn’t see any response for that.

yes sir, we have. The last thing we are checking tomorrow is the transfer case, I’ll try to upload a small video

I just replied to your message before reading this comment. My mechanic said there was some minor play on the spyder gears. But you replaced the locker and still have this noise? Wild.

Yes, we thought it was the transfer case, we changed that and it still had the noise. Ended up being the pinion, even though there was no seen damage to it. Very wild and our mechanic said he had not seen this before.

Interesting thread as I have a very similar issue with my 21 JLUR 6 speed and we also have the noise only on deceleration. It’s not really a grinding but more a humming / low howling. It started after a day on the trail when my rear locker failed.

I had already installed the Z Locker bypass harness last year. I also had re-geared to 5.13 gears two years ago.

When I first had it in the shop, my mechanic was convinced it was the rear pinion bearings and they were pitted, but replacing them didn’t make any difference as far as the noise. He also confirmed that the locker issue was not the sensor but another electrical failure in the module.

After spending several more hours diagnosing, he’s now convinced that the main cause of the noise is the rear drive shaft and some additional noise is coming from the failed locker. I’m waiting on a price to replace both.

Yes we went through changing everything. The pinion and gears showed no damage whatsoever. After changing bearings, axle shafts. Axle housing, transfer case, drive shaft. Trying to fix this noise, it was finally the pinion, once replaced with spicer, back good a new.

My husband works at a jeep shop, just a long process to diagnose the actual issue as nothing was showing signs of being broke. The axle shafts and housing we purchased, since those were found to be good. His is a rubican and mine is a Sahara, we are going to use those for my jeep and swap it over to rubicon axles with lockers.

What you're describing sounds like what happened to my rear diff. Abused it "a bit" too much. Low pitched humming / howling when decelerating. Required diff replacement.
