What's the heaviest tire that the stock spare tire mount can hold without needing the tailgate reinforcement? I've seen numerous times on product sites that anything larger than the original tire needs one (possibly scaring people into making unnecessary purchases?), but it seems that that's not the case after reading many posts here. I have a Sport S and am "only" going to upgrade to 285/75/17s A/Ts (probably Cooper or something similar). Any thoughts?

Since the rubicon comes with 285s and I am sure it is the same mounting bracket as the S, I don’t see any reason to reinforce anything.

The manual say that the JL doesn't need anything al long as the weight doesn't exceed 85 pounds. Dont recall the page but you can download and find.

You can put 85lbs over and above the stock tire\wheel weight.
