Although I have a 3 car garage, it serves as my home gym:

There are even a few new pieces since I made that video. With that in mind, I won't be garaging my new JLU nor do I think I'm going to store the top in the garage. I live in San Diego so I'm planning to have the top off much of the year. I'm even hoping to buy a soft cover that I can just take off quickly.

My current thinking is that I will pick up a wheeled storage cart where the top sits upright (window down) and cover that too and leave it on the side of my house.

What down sides are there to storing it that way? Are there any other storage solutions that I should be considering?

Thanks in advance.

(And for those who recommend storing in the garage with a lift... Although I haven't ruled that out 100%, I'm fairly certain that I don't I want to crowd the space and have to deal with some lost lighting. Plus if I can't pull the vehicle in, I'd have to navigate the equipment to walk it in).

In my parent's day there was a cartoonist named Rube Goldberg famous for devising (on paper) ways of accomplishing tasks through the most difficult way possible.

The board game Mousetrap is based on his work.

I say this because the following is the "zebra" solution, not the "horse" one (i.e. "when you hear huffs think "horses," not "zebras") but here goes:

http://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/160775-Converting-a-factory-JK-JKU-hardtop-to-modular

Granted, it's never been done to my knowledge yet on JLs and it involves, for the less faint of heart, deconstructing (with saw) the back of the hardtop into sectional pieces, each lying flat where apart and not connected to the other to form the top.

Now--that said, there are many things people have devised for outdoor storage (and removal/installation) of the top if you don't want its entire footprint to take up the garage.

Another remedy is to purchase from FCA the softtop only, and get an aftermarket (when it comes out) hard top with an angled back (takes up less space when off the vehicle).

Here's an example of outdoor storage/removal of the FCA hard top: https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-write-ups-39/hard-top-removal-alone-17481/

The vertical storage you site is fine..people have devised carts to store the top at, like 80 degree (as opposed to straight up and down 90 degree) angles you might want to check out.

I'm assuming you would consider changing to the hard top during the colder months of the San Diego year. Maybe (when they come out--and they will) a soft top headliner might be adequate enough given the relatively mild climate of your locale.

Dam dude. You used your whole 3 car garage as a gym. I used only the 3rd car garage space as a gym And use equipment to rack back on the wall including PRX RACK , weight plates , bars , fold up bench bench and fold up treadmill. It will give me space for the toplift pros set up as I can store my hard top there and already set up racks on my studs for my doors on the wall as well.

* I hate having stuff on the ground to take up space. I use my studs. I have updated and now have a dumbbell rack and another weight plate on the stud for more weights.* pic is old...

I'm planning on putting my hardtop in the living room, covering it with a tablecloth and using it as a table.
Joking aside Ken--at least I think you are joking--why am I getting the idea that I need to make a mold of top of the back of the hard top, then attached it to a fine piece of table wood and sell it as "a hard top for a hard top";)

I was actually serious! But then again, my living room tends to be more of a storage space for my toys. Hahaha!
