Hi folks,

When I got my 2019 JLU Sahara I also bought the Mopar dog kennel. It fits great but recently my pup was able to tear a hole in the front netting so it defeats the purpose of keeping him in one place! He even managed to tear through the patch I put on it. He's a determined little guy!

Any recommendations for a hard-sided kennel which would fit a 2019 JLU? The idea was originally to give him a space to hang out while keeping dog hair limited to one area. I'm open to not using a kennel and keeping the entire trunk cordoned off for him but I'm worried about all the dog fur which gets trapped in the fabric or him possibly scratching up the plastic panels. I do have the weatherproofing mats installed in the back which help a little.

Would be even nicer to have something which protects him in an accident. The kennel itself is not the best but its limited space and soft shell are better than nothing, while leaving him completely open will probably be much worse. I did have a seatbelt harness but it doesn't work for the trunk.

Also, while I'm at it, if there's such a thing as a heated car bed for a dog I'd love to get recommendations for those. I like to travel to the mountains for snowboarding in the winter and would like to bring him, but it can get cold. He's a miniature husky and he's been able to brave it so far but I get worried about that.

Thanks!

My dogs are spoiled and get the whole back with the seats folded down. I used DirtyDog 4x4 dividers and netting on my JK and plan to do the same on my JL. I use the divider that goes right behind the front seats but they also make a divider for behind the rear https://store.dirtydog4x4.com/pet_c...t-divider-rear-for-jeep-jl-4-door-clone-.html That combined with their netting that goes over the roll bars gives you a fully contained area when the top is off.

Thanks! Any idea roughly how big each hole is? My pup is only 15 lbs and the hole he made in my current kennel is pretty small yet he's able to squeeze out. And have you noticed if they scratch up the plastic panels or anything like that?

Also, any thoughts on the safety when in an accident? With a smaller dog it's a bigger concern for me since he'd be much more mobile in a collision.

gfo,
Given your concerns, probably best to put a plastic dog crate or wire crate in there for him. If you go to this solution, using a couple tie down straps to retain the crate is a safe practice. Stay away from the folding crates .

I bought a 12v dog crate heating pad from somewhere. You can find a lot of different brands. But, if he chews, you'll just be buying them over and over. Probably better to get him some cheap used blankets or just leave him at home in a heated kennel.

Ditto on the wire crate. He can still look out and you can see him too. Plus he'll get good air circulation.

Roughly as big as my dog's head :) He can shove his head through if he really tries. He's a 70lb lab with a fat head, so probably around 7"x7"

And have you noticed if they scratch up the plastic panels or anything like that?
I have only had my JL for a week but haven't had any real issues on my last 2 vehicles that I had similar setups on. Hard plastics will get superficial scratches but carpets and things are fine. The scratches would probably disappear with a quick pass of a heat gun. I also make sure they don't stand on the door panels, so for the most part their feet remain on the backs of the back seats

Also, any thoughts on the safety when in an accident?
It's better than nothing, but he's still going to be tossed around. It'll keep him from going all of the way into the windshield and away from the pointy things in the front seats but that's about it

My setup for hunting a couple dogs and 2 guys. The rear seat is removed and there is a piece of 1/2" plywood, anchored from the front 2 tiedown ring positions. The plywood angles up slightly to some 9" legs that allow a few shotguns in soft cases to be stored under the platform. A 3" foam pad and a shipping blanket covers it all.

Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel. We had something like this but way bigger. It held both our Labs when they were pups.

Sorry about the big print!! Don't know why it's doing it..

A freaking husky doesn’t need a heated dog bed. They’re wearing their “heated dog bed”. I never heard of a miniature husky but I assume they’re a Lilliputian version of the correctly sized husky and have the proportionate amount of the same double coat. In which case it would not be possible to make them cold.

Edit: I had a husky for 12 years and you’re not keeping a husky anywhere it doesn’t want to be. They’re the dog with the highest rates adaptive intelligence. Which means, you’re not keeping it anywhere it doesn’t want to be.
