I know putting on the Jeep JL half doors requires torx bits. But I'm confused because the manual has torque specifications for door hinge bolts/etc. Do you use a torque wrench (what size?) along with the torx bits? Torque, torx, torque, torx, torque, torx, help!!

Yes.

You will want to torque the torx head bolts that hold the hinges to the doors. I don’t recall the spec off the top of my head, but I think it’s something on the lighter side, like ~50 ft-lbs.

Also, for the “size” of the torque wrench, it could mean more than one thing.

As far as it’s capacity to accurately set torque, that should be advertised with the wrench. Make sure it is in the correct unit. For example, in.-lbs vs. ft-lbs. You can always do the conversion in your head if you have on and need the other, but it may not fall within the range of the wrench.

As far as drive size (3/8”, 1/2”), it will not matter so long as you have the properly sized torx bit to fit the bolt head.

Hope this helps!

Yes, thanks. And that was the other confusing part. Do I buy a 3/8 or 1/2“ torque wrench? Would the torx bits that come with the Jeep fit either size torque wrench?

Another thing with torque wrenchs is that one size does not fit all, I have one for inch lbs, one for 30 to 80 ft lbs, and another for anything over that, they tend to lose some accuracy at the low and high limits for the wrench

The torx bits that come with the Jeep will not fit a typical socket wrench or a torque wrench because of this. Also, I don’t recall the the torx bits that come in the Jeep being large enough to adjust your hinges, but I could be wrong. I thought I remembered them being a size bigger than the door pin bolt.

3/8” vs. 1/2” drive is not important so long as you pick up a torx bit set that will work with your wrench. Most torque wrenches rated to higher ft-lbs are 1/2” drive.

This torx bit set from Harbor Freight will have you covered for just about any torx bit bolt on your Jeep, and many people are fond of their Icon brand torque wrenches.

Owners manual list torque as 7.5 ft lbs.

Torx is the type of tool; like Philips screw driver. You need a torque wrench that goes from 5 ft lbs and up. Get a micro torque wrench in inch pounds. 12 inch lbs to a foot pound.

Hinge bolt: 7.5 ft lbs or 90 inch pounds. Not much.

Are you trying to adjust them after putting them on? That’s the only reason to touch those.

Agree and to be honest I didn’t torque anything on my last pair that I had to adjust after purchasing. The new rig aligned with no adjustment needed.
