Hello Hive Mind,

Been doing a good bit of wheeling in the JLU 3.6 XR with 14k on it.

In 4Lo, when in a sharp turn, or when going down a very steep hill in 1st while off the brakes, or sometimes under load going up a hill, especially slow, I can hear a kinda low constant groan.

It’s definitely not the BLD/anti skid cycling. More of a steady groan/strain sound.

I had a gear guy check out my front pumpkin to see if it was gear noise and he said it looked fine.

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Jason

Sounds like BLD (brake lock differential) kicking in.

Can you get a recording of it?
Because the sound I'm envisioning sounds like your Jeep is haunted and excited for Halloween.

That's probably not right.

???

I’ll try on my next wheeling trip :) Might be a while. Having surgery :/

The day after I posted this, a new sound started. Ugh. Repeatable every single time.

I know what that sounds like… like anti-skid cycling. A little chatter. Then it stops.

This is a more steady state low groan without any of the cycling or higher pitched clicks that come with BLD.

Also, as noted, it can also happen going down a steep grade with straight wheels and no lack of traction.
I'm all out of ideas then. Good luck. I low key hope it's just haunted for Halloween though.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I am having a problem that sounds like this one (the first complaint, not the second). I just bought a 21 Rubicon with the 2.0L engine. When in 4 Low (only in 4 low) when on a trail, when steering into a turn or with some axle articulation, I hear a loud , low frequency groaning/grinding noise.

This Jeep is lifted with 35's, but only had 9100 miles when I bought it. The paint job looked brand new so it appears to have been a pavement princess. I am not sure previous owners ever had it in 4 low.

I am in Arizona so if you wheel, you're going to get pinstripes. I have attached a recording of the sound it makes. You're going to need something that reproduces low frequencies to hear it.

My previous Jeep was a 2015 JK. Before a repair it made a similar sound whenever it was in 4-wheel drive. With that Jeep, the sound was constant for the entire time it was in 4WD. The fix was to replace the front differential gear pack.

I'm still under warranty, but I'm not sure I could even get the Jeep to make the noise in the service department without finding a trail. I doubt the service guy would go that far.

Can anyone suggest what might be the cause of this?

I think mine is my steering system. I had my diffs checked out and they were fine. I can hear now a little when in 2WD during tight turns with bigger stickier tires.

I’m not gonna do anything unless something fails.

What noise are you talking about? The high pitched whining noise?

No. There is a low frequency groan/grind when the axle articulates or the wheels steer

Well, that 'video' isn't particularly helpful for trying to track it down, with no timestamps or reference points. It's filled with tons of noises none of which sound too bad.

Some power steering systems do indeed make a squeal.
