First time to go in 4-low on my 1st Jeep ever so I am wondering if this is normal. I went offroading this past weekend and didn't notice the noise until the end of the day when I put my top back on and no radio so it was quiet inside. Noise is only on the driver side front under the dash.

Otherwise, everything drives great, its just that strange grinding and only in 4-low, not sure about 4high(didnt check)

I attached a video, is this normal or what could it be?

Thanks!

Steve

Upon further self-diagnosis, I think this may be a normal sound of the limited slip in the Jeep Willys Extreme Recon.? I got in my wife's 2023 Willys Extreme Recon and it has the same noise while turning in 4L.

It is hard for me to hear what is going on in that video, but I can say if you're driving in 4WD on a high-traction surface (e.g. dry road), when you turn more than following the gentle bends in a road—especially 90º turns—, it will sound and feel like your tires are skipping due to the different circle circumferences and applying power to both wheels on the axle. It's not related to LSD because neither wheel is slipping. This will happen in 4H or 4L on the front wheels.

I know my rear LSD does not make noise when it is working.

I just tested it in 4H, the sound is still there but only noticeable during sharp turning. I was testing it in the back yard on the grass. When I originally noticed the noise it was at an ORV park on the trails.

Are you turning on pavement in 4 low?

No, the first time I noticed it was on the trails. When I am replicating I am doing it in the grass in the back yard.

Grass in the back yard could still be high enough traction that your tires aren't slipping. Same at a park depending on the type of surface on which you're turning. My answer would still apply (but it's possible you're experiencing something else).

Apparently, it's a common issue with the Jeep Nanny systems and the breaks during 4L & 4H. The link above shared by OminousSkitter is pretty interesting and is exactly the same thing I am experiencing.

I call it skipping myself. I think all Wranglers do it. Honestly I think all vehicles with a four-wheel drive mode do it. I've even had my tire skip on dirt. It was hard dried dirt, but it was still dirt. Only time it doesn't happen for me is if I'm on soft loose dirt.

Yes, I call it "skipping", too, when the tire skips. But if you're turning tight in 4WD the tire must either slip or skip, which is what I was trying to say. If the traction is high enough that your tires don't slip, they'll skip.
